The Girl Who Found Things 1/19/74

Iris Llyod possesses an unusual talent for finding things....including dead bodies. Starring Norman Rose, this is an interesting program that builds intrigue from the opening scene. The talented Iris becomes a threat to a family friend when asked to find his missing sister.

Cold Storage 1/13/74

One of my favorite programs which is interesting throughout. A young man thinks that he's free to live his life without his overbearing mother only to learn that he has to deal with her a bit longer. He then takes an equally difficult wife and attempts to use the same method to manage the problem.

The Chinaman Button 1/20/74

This program reminds us that greed was alive and well not only in the 90's but also in the 70's. The players in this drama are willing to do almost anything for money. The Chinaman button, as defined in this play, represents a most serious ethical issue. Would you press the Chinaman button? For a million dollars?

The Last Orbit 1/08/82

This play is a futuristic tale about a space shuttle commander who cut a deal with a woman during his first shuttle flight. He's preparing for his final flight when the woman comes to collect on the debt. The commander fails to remember the deal but the woman persists and reminds him of his duty.

Three Women 1/27/74

In this tale, we learn of a writer that falls in love with his work. He loses himself in his character and before long, he's completely incapable of discerning reality. Perhaps a ghost writer is his only hope.

The Man Who Heard Voices 1/29/74

In this tale, our main character is charged with taking care of his invalid wife. After she passes, he remarries. Saying more would only give away the plot.

The Crack in the Wall 5/20/74

A couple loses their 16 year old daughter and while trying to patch a hole in their basement wall, they hear a chilling noise. A "helper" comes along to offer assistance....at a price.

A Ghostly Game of Death 2/2/74

In this tale, we learn of a haunted house and a developer that wants to use the property. He hires two men to spend the night in the ghostly house.

A woman learns the hard way that she should respect the customs of a foreign culture. She hungers for an artifact that she has no business possessing. Soon, she hungers for much more.

A woman is unable to conceive a child so she turns to alternate means. Unfortunately, the seer she seeks counsel from has a sinister agenda.

A man confesses to killing his wife, Margaret. This murder was made in a fit of passion because Margaret had learned of his true love, Peggy.

A Choice of Witness 2/28/74

Mr. Bailey meets a man who makes his living by taking pictures. He doesn't sell the pictures. Instead, for a monthly fee, he promises not to reveal the photos. His "clients" decide that they've had enough of his service and plot action.

No Hiding Place 1/10/74

An ex-con appears in a respectable businessman's life only to squeeze some cash for his silence. The ex-con demands a lot of money but the price to get rid of him might be greater.

The Ring of Truth 1/26/74

This play is dominated by three characters: A professor, his daughter, and her fiance. The professor has written a book about ethics and specifically, about always telling the truth. However, he learns that people who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

Dead for a Dollar 1/21/74

A ruthless man is hated by many people because he runs roughshod over everyone. Two of them decide he must go and eventually someone does kill him. There are many people with motive and the police must determine who the killer is.

And Nothing But the Truth 1/23/74

One of the few stories I've heard with a younger sounding actor. An interesting story where a father demonstrates an act of kindness but no one believes the act is selfless. We learn why when we are told the complete truth. I wonder what would have been the conclusion if DNA evidence were available in 1974.

The Secret Life of Bobby Deland 07/03/74

A troubled orphan boy has a penchant for stealing items from his host families. He's an unusual youngster with equally unusual talents. Unfortunately, the unusual gifts are not completely developed by the author but the plot takes an interesting twist during its conclusion.

Mirror For Murder 5/27/74

A neglected wife looks into a mirror and sees her reflection change depending on her feeling of self worth . She leaves her home and works her way into some interesting and suspenseful situations. Soon, she learns that her boring, staid, life wasn't quite so bad.

The Longest Knife 5/21/74

A pig of a dictator rules a South American country with an iron fist. A woman attempts exact revenge for the killing of her son in a very unusual way.

The Bleeding Statue

A confusing story with too many characters to enjoy. An illusionist has died and leaves his fortune to family members. He soon performs his greatest illusion by controlling family members from the grave. Is he dead or not?

The 36th Man 11/14/74

Set in the early 1900’s, this tale is based on a Hebrew legend which states that the earth is protected by the lives of 36 human beings whose lives are virtuous. Harry Cohen appears to be a poor businessman and this wife, Ruth, is frustrated by his childlike kindness which prohibits them from getting ahead. When approached by an elderly man, during a torrential rainstorm, Harry accepts the burden of being one of the 36 unblemished souls. He is tempted several times by the Prince of Darkness, his mistress Lilly, and by his wife, but Harry accepts his burden and assumes the role of the 36th man.

This program was interesting in that I actually heard myself say, “Oh, wow” when I realized that the 36th man had the responsibility to find his replacement. The story was well written and coherent with just enough characters to make it interesting. The acting was excellent and E.G. Marshall is in rare form with interesting bridges between acts. For the history buffs, Sam Dan weaves the advent of the airplane, the onset of World War I and a silent cameo by Sigmund Freud into the story. Overall, this is a very good story which is firmly grounded in an interesting and thought provoking Hebrew legend.

The Phantom Lullaby 5/29/74

A couple and their adult daughter move to a home which has been known to host a ghost. The daughter has recently made a very difficult decision and her much older boyfriend is not present. She begins to speak French and we learn the reason in the concluding moments.

Dressed to Kill 5/30/74

A struggling actor and part-time con man finds a devilish means towards financial security. He puts forth a brilliant performance when he dresses in drag. But is it enough to pull the wool over the eyes of the police?

After the Verdict 02/06/74

In this story, a lawyer defends a client in a murder trial. After an acquittal is reached, the lawyer learns the truth about his client and he struggles with what to do.

To Kill with Confidence 6/03/74

A newlywed couple are on a honeymoon when their car begins to have problems. They take the car to a local mechanic and when the wife departs for a trip to the mall, a twilight zone-like story begins.

The Acquisition 1/04/82

A businessman who is inept at all things except for business makes a merger proposition with a young lady at the advice of his doctor. He learns the meaning of love when he is stranded in another time.

Honeymoon With Death 1/11/74

Jennifer Brady and her "husband", Howard, have recently returned from a honeymoon. Before long, it's apparent that Jennifer is suffering from perceived delusions. Her sister, Maggie, is concerned and offers assistance when a flatfoot happens upon he scene. The policeman, Ed Helmut, has a bit of "Columbo" in him and before long, he asks the right questions and annoys the story's antagonists. Soon, he couples the answers to his questions with some cunning intelligence to get to the bottom of the story.

The Victim 2/19/82

John Lithgow is the lead in this play which centers on a man falsely accussed of murder. The story is a bit predictable until a minor twist at the end.

Hickory, Dickory, Doom 2/26/79

This program centers on a young Pennsylvania couple who purchase an antique grandfather clock at a garage sale. The clock appears to be a bargain but when the couple take the clock home, they experience several odd things. After a visit from the woman's mother, they contact a pyschic investigator who in turn brings his assistant into the fray. Soon, they learn the true demonic purpose of the clock.

The Suicide Club 5/7/74

Just as the title indicates, this is a radio play of the Robert Lewis Stevinson story. An excellent listen but my copy was less than perfect and therefore a bit annoying.

Men Without Mouths 04/16/74

A former gangster (with a great radio voice) has panic attacks and visualizes men and women without mouths. His "neice" is soon to be married to a young doctor who believes the attacks are borne from guilt. His toment eventually ends but not because of a simple confession. We learn why the men have no mouths in the last few seconds of the play.

Ordeal by Fire 3/21/74

This play centers on the Promethean Society, a secret group dedicated to the improvement of morality throughout the world. Vernon Marcus has agreed to become a member but has second thoughts when actually having to fork over a $1,000,000 "contribution". Promos, the leader of the society is very forceful and anyone who doesn't obey, or who challenges his authority, lives to regret it. Vernon calls upon Brian Casey, a private detective, to look into the issue.

Time And Again 1/27/74

A man comes upon a clock with a 13th hour. The clock provides it's owner with a small gift of time every 12 hours but at a great price. An excellent listen.

Dead Ringer 2/1/74

This program is a very good play centered on a woman, her husband, and a gentleman she meets that looks virtually identical to her husband. Prepare yourself for some interesting listening.

All Things Must Die 4/29/74

A mistreated wife wishes yearns for some sort of company. She talks to her plants and takes good care of them. Soon, they carry out her wishes but they do not like the notion of being replaced.

Prognosis Negative 3/3/74

An interesting tale of a former P.O.W. who has been mentally damaged by his tormentors. Kent Hatcher murders people after speaking a halted mantra of “6...5...3, Listen to me, listen to me”. He
is a fugitive when he happens upon a medium and her partner. They are determined to use Kent as, “Mazumodar”, an Indian mystic in their confidence game.

Dig Me Deadly 2/13/74

An interesting archeological tale in which a young woman is found as an artifact. A cleaver female investigator comes to the rescue and uses her wit and some biting quips to solve the case.

Diary of a Madman 3/25/74

An excellent thriller that lets us look into the heart of an evil man. He kills because of the laws of nature. Eventually, the "artist" has the book thrown at him.

The Sending 3/6/74

A terrific tale of the supernatural. This story centers on a mirror with rejuvenating powers for it's owners. A man and his wife use the mirror to take the lifes of people who are in possession of it.

Death By Whose Hand 3/26/74

A story set in Austria during the 1800's where music is very important. A pianist makes his debut and will be very successful if not for the jealousy he creates. His friend/rival inherits his talent.

The Old Ones Are Hard To Kill 1/6/74

Agnes Moorehead is the lead in this, the inaugural play of the CBS Radio Mystery Theater. An old woman rents a room to a man who confesses to murder on his deathbed. She does some minor detective work and talks about her ideas to her next tenant. The man, Stewart Windfield, may not be completely innocent and doesn't seem to have the woman's best interest in mind.

A woman and her abusive husband live a stormy relationship. The husband wants a dog but the wife is terrified of even the smallest of dogs. Eventually, the man gets his way....or does he?

A Lady Never Loses Her Head 2/16/74

An American woman crosses the Atlantic to visit England, only to marry unexpectedly. She finds that she looks remarkably like a painting of a woman from the distant past. The newly-married woman learns that her "twin" from the past was beheaded and soon, a headless horsewoman begins to visit.

An interesting tale of a couple with marital problems who are trapped in a blizzard. They learn of a horrible murder before stumbling into a small cabin where they plan to ride out the storm.

A woman by the name of Joyce is speaking to another woman about her experiences. She provides the listener with family portraits (mother and father in unflattering lights) and explains details about her past. Without trepidation, she explains that she has agreed to be decapitated by her doctor.

Here Goes The Bride 2/4/74

A woman marries a man who has been previously married. His first wife is a favorite of the servants and she appears to be sorely missed. We wonder why she died and what caused her death. Is the new bride in jeopardy?

Ghost at High Noon 7/29/74

Had to take Brian's recommendation and listen to this one. And a good one it is. Two women are stranded on a desert highway when a man comes to help them. This story has both a 'Hotel California' and 'Twilight Zone' flair.

A woman and her fiance are traveling to see a friend when they come upon sounds of "Ring a Ring of Roses". The investigate only to witness a horrible scene. Soon, such scenes hit closer to home.

An interesting tale centered on four spelunkers who are trapped in a cave. Legend has it that a "Thing" resides in the cave which adds significantly to the tension.

An ecologist whose work takes him into a swamp happens upon a woman who claims to have been a captive of a swamp creature.

Out of Sight 3/2/74

This tale could have been based on the "Groung control to Major Tom" song by David Bowie. It's a futuristic story that hits a little close to home given the two space shuttle disasters.

The Edge of Death 2/26/74

A woman and her husband see a man without a mouth who has escaped from Clearwood sanitarium. He's dressed all in black and appears to be searching for something - perhaps the medical bag found on their property.

Based on a true story of a great French short-story writer, this tale centers on a force that steals the strength and sanity of it's author.

The Walls of Jericho 2/21/74

The pretentious Ralph Waldo Emerson Club members look down upon a man who serves them. He decides to predict some fantastic events that will happen in the club and post them, anonymously, on the message board.

A Holiday Visit 12/25/80

A young couple return for Christmas, after a 12 year absence, to the woman's hometown of Runyanville, OH. Her parents are excited to see them but the young couple are involved in a car crash which leads them on an adventure.

A terrific tale of a sea voyage where the captian is a very jealous man. He brings his wife on board which causes terrific problems.

The Lady Was A Tiger 2/5/74

This program is a cold war spy thriller with multiple twists and turns. It's difficult to distinguish the good guys from the bad guys. The plot centers on a newspaper executive who is an unwitting pawn in a deadly game. The show I have is complete with a news brief that explains that teachers in Kansas are striking because they object to a 10% pay increase!!! It turns out later in the brief that inflation is running at more than 10% per year!

In this play, we're introduced to a man who is very attractive to women. He puts himself in a position to be blackmailed by several of the women who want to be close to him.

A man is incensed that his book on witchcraft and the occult is panned by a critic. How vows that he will bring the very forces that are ridiculed by the reviewer, to exact his revenge.

Dead Man's Mountain 2/10/74

A greedy and cold businessman has plans to develop a beautiful mountain area. He sends one of his associates on a recon trip only to find the man greatly aged upon his return.

A Sacrifice In Blood 3/12/74

An archeologist discovers relics that prove his theories and bring him noteriety. At the site, he and his wife find a baby on a sacrificial altar. They bring the boy home and raise him as their own.

A woman with principles is engaged in a political campaign when events from her past threaten her congressional future. Her husband, ironically, is the detective who is charged with solving a crime she committed.

This presentation may be my all time favorite as the storyline is the excellent. Based on the actual events of Germany's Third Reich, Henry Slesar gives us a new and imaginitive twist to the story of Hitler. Please give this one a listen - I think you'll enjoy.

A nameless man is confined in a completely dark and soundproof room for an extended period of time with only minimal sustenance. His tormentors are amazed that he survives the ordeal. A very dark tale, indeed.

A small town of 100 superstitious inhabitants discovers that it's sitting on a gold mine. One woman, Janice Hollins Miller, is singled out as a carrier of bad luck. She's asked to leave town but when she refuses, the townspeople elect to take matters into their own hands.

The Follower 1/26/75

Jim Beacher, a ruthless showbiz agent, is being followed by a phantom that he cannot see. The phantom stops when Jim stops and places it's feet directly in his footsteps so no trace of a follower is evident. A number of people could be interested in seeing his demise but his wife believes his problem is mental and recommends counseling.

The writing partnership of a husband and wife team is abruptly terminated when the wife kills her husband. She is encouraged to complete the story her husband had outlined, prior to his death, but the outline is difficult to find.

A couple finds themselves in a European castle after becoming stranded in a moor. They meet the decendent of a "head chopper" at Broadmore Manner who seems to take himself very seriously. He warns them not to enter a particular room in the Manner.

Though Jennifer is the first to admit that she may not be marriage material, Tony takes her hand just the same. After they are wed, Jennifer meets a brilliant surgeon, Dr. Stone, and they have a brazen relationship, known to the entire community and to Tony. The story takes a terrific twist which I won't reveal so as not to spoil the ending.

An incredibly gripping, though disturbing, tale of a man who confesses a bizarre quasi-voyeuristic act to a psychiatrist. He has been in seclusion for 25 years after learning of his wife's infidelity and he stumbles upon a young couple who are at his favorite vacation hideaway. He entombs the couple and then listens to their struggles. The play is dominated by a single actor who does an excellent job of acting.

An excellent tale by Elspeth Eric centered on a woman who has a sixth sense. Her sister becomes a houseguest, after a falling out with her husband, and demonstrates peculiar behavior. We learn the genesis of the behavior in the final and compelling act.

The Sleepy Village is a well told tale of the familiar "trapped in a town" theme. It's extremely well written and with the addition of some excellent acting, this program is well worth a listen.

Based on a story by Sir Aurthur Conan Doyle, this program is an intriguing play of suspense. We learn of a young man who knows of a secret but who cannot explore the secret until his 21st birthday. Though a bit predictable, the story is well acted and well written and is certainly worth the listen.
