The Follower
January 26, 1975

meh... was o.k.

Story of a self-absorbed s.o.b who is tortured by his own deeply burried moral sense; by the time he comes to terms with it, he perishes from the cumulative effects of a life not well lived.

There seemed to be more subplots in this episode than others I have listened to recently:
- the main character's marital problems
- the main character's haunting by 'the follower'
- the wife and doctor's relationship
- the main character's past relationship

I thought the ending a bit weak. Anytime a character dies of fright, I am left unsatisfied. I'm also constantly amused with the attitude toward psychiatrists and psychology. As a psychology major many years ago, I know how hard the field has had to, and continues to fight for acceptance as a legitimate scientific field.

Heart of Gold
February 18, 1977

Concept similar to “The Picture of Dorian Gray” by G. B. Shaw. Wealthy philanthropic woman with an obsession for gold commissions an artist to create a portrait to be stamped on a series of gold coins she is having made of her accumulated gold items. Two flashbacks demonstrate the extent to which she will go to acquire gold, even at the expense of her closest friends. While the original portrait is a flattering reflection of her outer image, the image on the coins are a reflection of her ‘true self’.

She dies of shock at the end.

The Girl Who Found Things
January 19, 1974

A naughty schoolgirl with apparent psychic ability to find lost things exposes even naughtier adults and their indiscretions. While predictable at times, the characters are engaging and interesting. Strong character development in this episode put it on the Must-Listen-To list.

Hands of Mrs. Mallory

An interesting tale with a twist at the end I found hard to predict until very late in the episode. Mrs. Mallory suffers from a paralysis of the hands onset shortly after her husband’s death. Doctors are unable to find a cure and tell her it may be psychosomatic, a diagnosis she finds distasteful and insulting.
She meets another woman suffering from similar conditions who is seeking help from a Dr. Grif who uses psychedelic drugs and the powers of suggestion and, when the woman is seen later cured of her affliction, she seeks the out the doctor and his miracle cure.
The word GRIFTER means, “money made dishonestly. A confidence game.” Could it be that Dr. Grif’s name is no coincidence?
A surprise ending gives this episode a strong conclusion.

Having a Horrible Time
August 21, 1974

A fun script that smacks of the 1970s in the most delightful way. A woman receives well-publicized accolades for ‘fingering’ a well known mob boss. Her reward: cash from the newspaper, and death threats from the mob. She and a friend take off for a week’s holiday at a ‘swinging singles’ retreat (hahaha! Why don’t they still exist!?) where she encounters both friend and foe in the most unpredictable places. The episode has several twists and shifts to keep the listener guessing.

The Black Room
October 29, 1974

This episode is a character study and an exploration of the meaning of life. It helps to suspend disbelief more than usual in this episode that raises more questions than answers. Virtually a one person performance by Larry Haines who does a remarkable job of portraying the changing emotions of a man held in sensory deprivation for several weeks as an unwilling participant in a social experiment. While most perish in the so-called Black Room, he survives with the help of a small mouse and a pin-prick of light.

A Cage for Augie Karo
October 24, 1974

A hardened criminal comes into possession of magic dust that places the user into a centuries-long sleep, allowing the individual to escape the trials and tribulations of their current life and start fresh in a new era. The old man who bequeaths the dust says that over many centuries of use, he too has merely repeated the mistakes of the past and seems doomed to an eternity in jail.

As I am listening more critically to these episodes, I'm finding several with weak endings. When I started listening to this episode, I thought that we would hear about this character in several ages. Rather, the entire episode was a build up to the use of this magic dust, and a brief, and unsatisfying description of the consequences.

I think this script would have been much better had the character used the magic powder, and we could see the power of fate as the character, despite trying to reform, slips into, or is fated to repetition of life patterns.

The Imp in the Bottle
September 3, 1974

I loved this episode. The 'secret' or 'mystery' to this episode was out of the bottle, so to speak, very early in the episode. What was enjoyable was watching the moral nature of the characters emerge and become better defined.

A young man purchases, for a ridiculously small sum, an imp in a bottle that will grant virtually any financial wish made by the owner of the bottle. The only condition is that the owner must sell it for less than it was purchased for before death, or have his soul condemned to an eternity of damnation.

The protagonist has his moral fortitude tested and emerges with it intact. A fun example of a story where the 'good guy' gets to have his cake and eat it too smile.gif

Hexed
July 5, 1977

An episode about the supernatural goings-on in Ceylon, now Sri Lanka. Or maybe it isn't the supernatural, merely the workings of our own imagination! This episode reminded me how far we have come in terms of combating racism and building acceptance for other cultures. The locals in the story are treated with condesention and suspicion... Master and Slave relationships. There is a line that is something like, "walking around barefoot like the locals in a dirty sari."

:125: <-- appropriate emoticon smile.gif

Taking that all as a symptom of a less tolerant past, the story itself was good. A young woman in Ceylon lets her curiosity about the supernatural become an obsession to the point of paranoia. She goes to extreme lengths to convince others of what she believes is happening to her with unfortunate (of course) consequences.

I rather enjoyed this episode. The first in a while that didn't deal with psychosomatic or psychological problems. A 1980's reporter finds information on a 19th century doctor/inventor who reportedly has invented a time machine. The reporter finds it and is transported back to the doctor's age where he is petitioned by the doctor to discover information about his daughter's love fearing that her suitor is really a serial murderer.

The reporter discovers the truth, wins the heart of the fair maiden, and deciding to remain in the past lives happily ever after.

Strange to have such a just and happy ending.

Dracula
May 2, 1974

I thought this episode was quite well done, considering they’ve taken an 800 page narrative and crunched it down into 10 pages of pure dialogue. E.G. Marshall uses traditional conventions of gothic fiction warning the listener to beware, to turn away if faint of heart, and vouching for the veracity of the tale to come.

I won’t bother describing the story because everyone knows it already. This rendition is well worth the listen and may even encourage some to pick up the original novel and give it a read. A challenging task, to be sure, but filled with memorable scenes.

My wife watches Days of Our Lives… the character of Van Helsing reminded me of the Rolf character from Days. What kind of accent is that?!

The Last Days of Pompeii: City of the Dead
Jan 7, 1980

Thought I'd tackle this 5 part series. What better way to spend part of a weekend than by indulging in an epic!

First thing I noticed was the pacing. Certainly was different than other episodes. This episode served primarily to introduce the characters - sets up the individuals that we presumably will be following for the next 4 episodes.

I will need to listen to it again to really get hold of the story line. At this point, there's a blind girl befriended by a wealthy young man who saves her from being run over by a cart. He encounters her in different places throughout the episode and ends up purchasing her from the owner of a bar where she is serving as a barmaid.

Another part of the story line is this man's desire to find a woman whose face has been haunting him. He discovers her quite by accident after approaching a religious leader and leaving a donation to have his prayers in this regard answered. His friend asks for good shipping conditions for his business but leaves copper rather than gold and is encountering bad luck and misfortune.

No supernatural, no unexplained phenomenon, no psychological terror... just a story of the relationship between a father and son.

This is a beautiful episode. A man is called to take his elderly ailing father home from prison on a compassionate parole from his robbery sentence. His son is an honest and hard-working down-to-earth individual who despises his father for his crimes and his absence in his own youth. Reluctantly he takes him in. The son's business partner is pressuring him to buy him out and the bank is hesitant to lend him the entire sum. The son, desperate for cash, demands from his father the money he is said to have received from the robbery, but denies he ever had.

Well developed characters. It sounded like the little grandson was actually played by a child actor, which was wonderful. I recall other episodes (The Hands of Mrs. Mallory) where the role of children are quite obviously played by adults, and quite unconvincingly.

A clockmaker acquires a strange clock that gives to the owner an extra two hours per day. But nothing comes for free. I can’t say any more without spoiling the story.

The Man Who Heard Voices
January 29, 1974

A young crackerjack lawyer tirelessly tends to his critically ill wife ensuring she receives her pills every two hours. His boss at the law firm has great plans for him and tries to groom him for eventual partnership while the boss' daughter tries grooming him for something more romantic. The young man must choose between career, the beautiful healthy boss' daughter, and his wife.

Complicating this is his occasional ability to hear his own thoughts and the thoughts of others both in the present and in the future.

My copy of this episode is missing the last 4 minutes or so... but was far enough into it to predict the ending. A good program with that ironic twist at the end (i think
