Nefertiti (Part I) The Vulture Screams
January 8, 1979
http://www.akhet.co.uk/nms/nefbust.jpg
http://www.akhet.co.uk/amarna/index2.htm
In this episode we are introduced to the principle characters. Nefertiti, daughter of the Prime Minister has, through inner workings and the intention of her father, been betrothed to Akhenatan, presented as a spineless, whimpering simp who, though heir to the throne, could barely walk across the street without holding his mother’s hand. Nefertiti is a strong willed woman with a lust for power and a cruelty that bubbles near the surface. After the death of Amenhotep, Akhenatan’s father, Akhenatan is to be made pharaoh and married to Nefertiti on the same day. In one flashback, they recall a moment in their childhood when the two of them, playing with their dear friend Horemheb, attack an overseer for mistreating a slave. Akhenatan is less than enthusiastic about it while the other two show their strength and courage at a young age.

Nefertiti (Part III) The Cobra Strikes
January 10, 1979
Nefertiti and Akhenaten continue their crusade to convert the Egyptians to one god and embark on a plan to create a city dedicated to their chosen god. Meanwhile, General Horemheb brings news of armies encroaching on Egyptian soil and urges Akhenaten to take swift and decisive action. Akhenaten’s gentle and trusting spirit can only believe that they are coming in peace and refuses his general’s commands. The general acts anyway and secretly plans an anonymous attack to drive away the army he knows to be aggressive. Akhenaten is furious and orders the general to take command of his personal retinue, effectively an insult to the great strategist. The only problem with this plan was that it brought Nefertiti and Horemheb closer together. Nefertiti sends him off to do what he will to defend Egypt despite the wishes of Akhenaten.

There she sees to the burial of her daughter in her own fashion as she doubts the religious road she and her husband have taken. Akhenaten is, of course, outraged at this and tracks them down. He takes possession of the body and performs a ceremony more suited to the message they are preaching. Nefertiti vows to reject entirely their previous work and refuses to acknowledge the god she and Akhenaten had praised before. She is taken into custody and imprisoned. Akhenaten has grown since the first episode and has grown into the power of his position and perhaps, even surpassed it.

The oldest, while spending the day with her father was ordered to spend as long as it would take to learn the prayer to their chosen god. She spends the day in the hot temple on her knees in prayer until she collapses from exhaustion and eventually dies. The chasm between the two continues to widen. The professor then says to the warden that at the moment the trap door opened and he is swinging dead, the same will happen to him. The warden will become Jack the Ripper. The Benjamin Franklin Murder
Apr 7, 1975
A woman is trying to sell her home because it is far too large and costly to maintain. A potential buyer lo-balls the offer claiming that the house is haunted, and whatever purpose he could put the land or building to would be tarnished by the home’s reputation. While the woman assures him it is not, her close relation claims it is. Ben Franklin is brought in to help figure things out.
Don’t know why it had to be Ben Franklin… perhaps the It’s Murder Mr. Lincoln episode received good reviews so why not have another president episode?

Arriving at their destination, they dig holes in the back yard (why, I can’t remember, maybe it’s just an archaeologist thing,) and find a slab of stone that swallows them up.

A Challenge for the Dead
Apr 18, 1975
A city cop has committed the better part of his career trying to find the evidence needed to convict him of a murder committed 20 years ago. He believes sometimes that he is the only devoted and hardest working cop around and becase he didn’t play the political game, he was passed over for promotion. The suspect was a childhood friend who is known today for being a racketeer. The cop’s wife was a childhood friend of her husband and grew up in the same neighbourhood.
This crime mystery had some potential but rather than twist and complicate things at the end, the story unfolds in a predictable, conventional, unimaginative manner. A disappointing episode.

Don't Let It Choke You
May 21, 1975
A wealthy antique dealer lives a bachelor’s life with his man servant with whom he served as a Green Beret. His daily ritual of drinking from a green phial and sitting in an armchair day-dreaming of a long lost love, shows his deep seated desire for love. Yet, never having any luck with women, despite his charm and devilishly good looks, he vows to live the life of a bachelor recluse and vows off women. Receiving a telegram from a friend, he learns that he has become the guardian of a certain 17 year old. He is perturbed at first but sets about to prepare for his young charge. That is just the beginning of the changes and surprises that are about to come.
The whole thing with the liquor in the green phial is never clearly connected to the plot – I can only guess it is perhaps a reference to Absinthe and the daydreams are a kind of trip that results from the liquor.

Quite frankly, I didn’t see the point of this episode. It was over at the introduction. We knew about the murders, the perpetrator, and the method of execution. The motive was revealed late in the first act. After that it was like listening to paint dry.
Several New York entertainment big wigs receive mysterious letters claiming they will be rewarded for their generosity in the past to a girls who is now quite wealthy and offers them $50,000 if they can confirm their identity using the self-addressed stamped envelope. They all die.

*shudder*
This must have been a mistake.
Act I
A ‘business man’ is in the hospital after a heart attack and is obsessed with building a crypt for his remains. His partner suggests shelves for his loved ones, an idea that is not appealing to either him or his relatives. The heart attack victim then suggests cornering the market on sponges. He also says he has been dwelling on reincarnation and then has another attack.
Act II
An elephant is born and learns about the wonders of life, the universe and everything from his elephant mother.
Act III
Businessman is revived after his heart stopped for 6-8 seconds…

Jul 28, 1975
After her brother is accidentally gunned down in a gang-style execution, a professor of economics appeals to the police to investigate further claiming that he was not the first man, engaged to a particular beautiful woman, to have died in mysterious circumstances. In fact, he was the fourth, and she is engaged again. She pressures the police to do something to save this poor man from a certain fate… but what will the charge be?
My copy of this file is missing the ending – it switches to a few minutes of a Suspense episode then concludes with about 5 minutes of a Shadow episode. Very strange.

Hung Jury
A fabulous story with a labyrinthine plot line. There are more layers of complexity to this story than any so far. An apparent saint is leading a double life gambling and having an affair when his credit is called in. He is faced with having his life turned upside down when fate steps in and seems to do a mostly good man a good turn.

Little Old Lady Killer
The cleverest thing about this episode is the title. The listener has all the details about the killer and the motives from the beginning. All that is left is to listen to the police solve the case.

The Slave
Old college friends make a bet that one could not survive a year as the other's personal slave. All this to prove a point that slavery is bad for the slave but good for the master. There is a lot of potential for this story line but it fell far short of my expectations and showed a real lack of imagination turning it into Nothing more than college style shenanigans. Very disappointing.
