Just a notion given that most of us were youngsters back in the 70's, I wonder how successful the Budweiser commercials were. Anyone toss back Bud on a regular basis? vince

Good topic Vince.
I've heard some interesting commercials that really take me back in the CBSRMT programs. I heard one the other day for Ozark Airlines.
I heard a lot of those "Here comes the king, here comes the big number one" Budweiser commercials back in the 70's. Let's just say that "advertising works." :096:
It would be interesting to note how many advertisers we hear on the programs are no longer in business.

I've knocked back a few Budweisers in my life. Now that I'm a little older, I'm a little more discriminating.
I drink Guinness and Glenlivet single malt scotch.
Somebody in New York will have to tell us if the Shop-Rite supermarkets are still in business.
Ohio State football was a major sponsor on my home station. I would have to say they're still in business since they are NATIONAL CHAMPIONS.

I'm the same Brian ... more picky now. A cold Bud is good - but for beer I prefer Geary's Pale Ale (made in Maine) and single malt Scotch's - presently a bottle of Balvenie. smile.gif

You guys have discriminating taste!! I hate to admit that I'll toss back an MGD or even an Old Milwaukee Light (oh the horror!!!).
Anyway, I love to listen to the programs with the old cars like the AMC Matador (This company is GONE JOHNSON) or the Buick Apollo. I can't say that I remember the Apollo but you can sure tell the advertisers were trying hard to make their products fit the energy crisis. For example, Buick didn't have a small car with the efficiency of the Hondas or Toyotas of the world so they stressed "range". According to the add, they put a 21 gallon tank in their small car!!!!!!!!!! vince

The Buick Apollo was a Nova with a fancier exterior trim package, more interior options, and a smaller motor. It was hard to tell them apart from the Nova.
I'd like to see what would happen if someone wrote to "Catalog, Pueblo, Colorado 81009"
vgarci
April 15th, 2003, 02:20 AM
Ahhh the "Catalog". I had forgotten about the "Catalog". Gotta' smile. How about the "Message from the Better Business Bureau"?

April 15th, 2003, 02:33 AM
The Better Business Bureau spots were great! Really corny and memorable.
I can still recite at least one of those Catalog commercials.
I don't want to sound like a snob. If I'm at a picnic or fishing, I'll drink Budweiser. I just don't keep the stuff around the house.

Brian,
I didn't think you're a snob but I just struggled through college on a shoestring budget and learned to develop a taste for the cheap stuff. Anyway, you're absolutely right about the BBB spots. I got a great kick out of them. I must say, the King of Beers also produced some excellent radio spots. They are still the most memorable to me. vince

When it comes to beer I prefer something with some [b:5a42bb099d]taste[/b:5a42bb099d] and the regular commercial beers are not where it's at for me! I like micro-brews, etc. At least something with some beer taste! :096:
Funny that you should mention those cars. We were driving down Maine Route 9 Saturday when there it was - a AMC Concorde. It was pea green and sitting in someones front yard with a "For Sale" sign on it.
I told my girlfriend that someone would have to be nuts to buy it. If you were riding in it you would need this sign:

I just caught this thread and would have to agree that there is a certain charm to hearing those old commercials again. Some are dated, some are corny and some are as ridiculous as the ones we have today. The Budweiser spots were the probably the best produced spots and memorable ones. I have had a few bottles in the past, but I can only take it on several occasions. (Usually visiting a cousin who seems to have kept stock options on Bud as well as cases on hand).
By the way living near NYC, the Shop Rite supermarket chain still exists. Their prices have gone up though. :D
By the way, one of my favorite old commercials is McGruff, the Crime Dog. I guess it's a hold over from my days of watching School House Rock and Warner Brothers cartoons on Saturday mornings. Now that I have dated myself, I'll be seeing you around.

Hi Matt,
Welcome back. McGruff the Crime Dog was still going in the late 90's. I have not heard one of those PSA's for a whole now so I don't know about that. Maybe all the advertising on CBSRMT kept that super-market chain going in the New York area this long.
I like my micro-brews but I guess when you say Budweiser, you've said it all.

Matt and Charlie,
I also toss back a mirco brew once in awhile and my favorite is brewed in Fort Collins, CO by a company called O'dells. It's a 90 shilling ale. Anyway, about the comercials, they certainly had their charm and I also remember School House Rock. In fact, I can still recite the Preamble to the Constitution due to one of my favorite little SHR numbers. vince

Yeeehaaaaa . . . BEER!
Listening to some RMT Bud commercials last night. My personal faves were the "Raven House Mysteries" though. The commercials themselves were kind of a mini-spin-off of RMT. I actually read some of them after hearing the commercials. They weren't bad either.

trying to make my way through all the threads... of course the discussion about the beer and single malt scotch perked my interest (note the nickname)
Quite frankly, I don't remember any of the ads when I listened to them at first broadcast. I am enjoying listening to the episodes with commercials.
I've been working on a database of episodes. Someday it will be complete, but will take many years to complete. The items with the * are complete already, being imported from existing lists. The other information will require actually going through each episode and recording the information.
If anyone is interested in participating in this exercise, maybe taking a 6 month period each, or something, let me know! Once it is done, I can post in online in searchable form.
* Episode number
* Title
* Broadcast dates
Length
Writer
Host
* Main Actor
Supporting Actors

Lag,
I noted the nickname early on and and wondered if you were a Lagaluvin lover. As for the database, Brian is the master if you look at his logs. He's made a great effort and I'd be willing to help carry the torch if time permits.

Please feel free to take what you need from my log.
I'm contributing to another effort on another site with my writer, cast, and plot summaries. The content and quality information I'm contributing to a few people on yet another site. And I'm doing the rating for people on that site who trust me enough to rate them.
I really appreciate people sending me their shows and helping me complete my collection. That is how I give back.
I've never tried Lagaluvin. I like single malt scotch, but I'm no connesieur. I stick to Glenlivet.

I'm a single malt scotch guy too. smile.gif
As far as program lengths and such, they should all be about the same. On commercials, some may be local commercials rather than network and would be different on the different copies of some of the programs floating around.

Charlie and Lag,
Have either of you tried Bushmills Irish Whiskey? It's pretty smoothe and it goes down easy (maybe a little too easy).

I've never tried Bushmills...
These are my scotches of choice:
Bowmore, Dalwhinie, Lagavulin, Oban, Aberlour, Craganmore,
I've tried, but don't really like Macallan (10 and 25), Talisker. If I'm mixing up a Rusty Nail I'll have Ballentines.
Glenfiddich and Glenlivet are alright, but not high on the list.

Irish Whiskey? Nope can't say I've been into that very much. I used to bartend though so I've tried a lotta stuff. smile.gif

I have a copy of [i:deb8d8af36]The Body Snatchers[/i:deb8d8af36] that has a commercial for Bonanza Steakhouse featuring a steak lunch (steak, salad, texas toast and soft drink) for a $1.19. Ah...the good old days.
I must admit that during my party days Miller High Life was my beer of choice. But I have downed more than a few King of Beers.

The $1.19 probably explains why we don't have a Bonanza where I live anymore. ;)

We had a Bonanza in Kansas where I lived. The food was pretty good. I am sure that I saw one of those somewhere in New England or Canada recently - Southern Maine I think. I thought that Bonanza was defunct :?:

On the Budweiser spots, I enjoy Ed McMahon asking "Ever have a frosty glass of...[i:044f9a82b9]amplitude[/i:044f9a82b9]?"
There's also a [i:044f9a82b9]faux[/i:044f9a82b9] James Brown singer spot where he sings the old "When you say 'Bud' " on "Return of the Moresbys" I think...excellent work, IMO.

in my drinking days i never was very fussy. my drinking buddies and i would drink whatever was cheep or free. Miller, Pabst, Bud, even a beer called Schafer. i think we got a 24 pack for $2.99. i always paid for it the next day. sometimes later that night. :cry: we would go to clubs that had all-you-can-drink for two bucks. most of the time i didn't know what i was drinking. they always seemed to taste better as the night went on. if i drank two gulps, the second would kill the tast of the first.
i've learned a lot since then.

I don't think I ever drank Budweiser in my life until I started listening to these old shows. Anyway I was grocery shopping the other day and when in the beer section I was drawn to the Bud from hearing the ads. I came home with 96 cans of it so I guess those ads paid off for the company.

96 cans? I hope you don't have a headache today.

It's funny, because in the 1960's and 1970's there were still regional beers that could hold their own against national brands like Budweiser and Miller. Up in New York, we had such mouthwatering brews as Piels (with their commercials starring "Bert" and "Harry"), Utica Club (with their talking beer steins "Schultz" and "Dooley"), Genesee (which still exists today) and Schaefer (you gotta love their ad campaign, if you're going to get drunk, drink Schaefer, because it's "The one beer to have when you're having more than one").
Actually, I did an article on the history of Utica Club beer for a breweriana magazine. It's at my homepage if anyone's interested in seeing it...

We always drank Strohs in college. Today, I also have better taste and drink many types of micro brew. I am also a huge fan of single malt and prefer Dalmore.
My father and mother in law lived in Utica in the early 60s and often spoke of Utica Club. The came back from a recent trip back east with an empty can which still sits on top of our kitchen cabinets. I loved your article on the talking beer steins.
