Just fer kix...

I mentioned a great performance in my last listening log program review, and it got me thinking.

You RMT afficianadoes...if you were to nominate oscar (for our intents and purposes, at least) caliber [i:1f0910cc63]performances[/i:1f0910cc63] by the RMTers, what actor-actress/performances would you nominate?

Kurt,
You can't know how impressed I am with this discussion thread and more importantly, with your offerings. I've listened to a lot of programs and I consider myself a true fan but I don't know if I'll ever have the wherewithal to know the actors as well as you do. In fact, I must admit that I find I can only consistently identify a few very distinctive actors (i.e., Fred Gwynne, Mason Adams, Mercedes McCambridge, and a few others). For whatever reason, I lose the voices in the characters they portray. My inability to recognize voices is so profound that I've listened to back to back episodes with the same actor or actress and after reading later that it was the same voice, I sit in disbelief. My hat is off to you, my friend!

Vince,

I'm honored, but also blushing. You're very kind but there are, IMO, some far more astute fans on here than I. I've got a bit of an ear for sounds, but mainly it came from my parents. My Dad was a college theatre professor and my Mom taught the same subject in high school and part-time for a bit in college. I grew up listening to their musicals and watching their plays, so being a "critic" sort of stuck with me.

Kurt,
I agree that there are some other very astute listeners on this forum (Brian and Steve immediately come to mind) but the listing you put together is very impressive. It's great that you credit your artistic parents with training your ear and I'll agree that your family's background in theater must be a big advantage.

I can recognize most of the male voices.

For me, some of the female voices are hard to tell apart. Bryna Raeburn does so many different voices. Joan Shay plays everything from the stately matriarch to the gangster's concubine.

I think Raeburn had a pretty good career doing voice overs. She did that national Diet 7Up campaign in 1974 and I've heard her on a couple others.

Charlie can testify that few people have a voice with the right resonance to do this successfully. I've got a little natural ability and with a little training, I do ok on television and radio. But I could never be a radio personality or a television reporter. People who can do voice overs get good money. I know because I hire them.

Great topic.

Norman Rose: The House of the Seven Gables

Rose is probably my favorite CBSRMT actor, closely followed by Larry Haines.

It's interesting how great performers can rescue a not-so-interesting script.
