I have listened to about 250 shows so far and have not yet heard it. The episode haunted me as a child and I must admit I plagiarized it to a degree for a high school writing project.
Two guys are fishing, talking about enlisting in the confederate army. One of them snags something and it turns out to be the dead body of a soldier. they enlist anyway, and when the battle gets heavy, one of them cuts and runs. The endo would spoil it for you.
Anybody know this one? I heard it sometime in 1979.

That sounds real familiar Brian. I think I listened to that one a year or so ago but I don't recall for sure. :?: :!: :?:
(That's exactly the reason for the Listening Logs forum now!)
Maybe I'll run across that soon.

Brian,
The episode is based on an Ambrose Bierce story and is entitled "A long way from home" (episode #780609). Quite poignant tale.

Excellent!! Thank you so much. I can't wait to hear this one again! It wasn't the first episode I ever heard, but it and Hickory, Dickory, Doom were the ones that got me hooked.

Brian, I hadn't listened to the latter program in awhile (and I promise I won't ask to "pitch" them as a tripleheader :D ) but if you fire up "A long way from home" you'll notice that the two union soldiers in the Civil War are played by Russell Horton and Lloyd Battista.
Well, interestingly, I listened to some other shows that I'd not heard in awhile and discovered that those two are paired as soldiers in two later episodes [i:6497a46a32]and[/i:6497a46a32] wars:
A. 780518 - "Time out of mind" (Didn't Steely Dan have a hit song with that same title around that same time?)
This involves Battista playing a Dad and Horton as his college-age son as they drive to the San Francisco area where Horton is a grad student. Suffice it to say circumstances involve Horton taking a strange trip back in time where he relives his Dad's brother's experience in World War II (Battista's character never told his brother that he loved him until he sent his bro a letter...the brother was killed in action and it was never confirmed whether he got the letter), and is in a european combat zone with a fellow soldier, again played by Battista. Very sad episode.
and;
B. 780313 - "The wheel of life". I've reviewed this one and it's somewhat interesting albeit a little slow paced in the later stages. In this one, Battista and Horton are in [i:6497a46a32]Viet Nam[/i:6497a46a32] combat. Battista, mortally wounded in a firefight, stumbles into a secret chamber where a bunch of asian monks with abacuses (abaci?) and a big "wheel of life" control everyone's destiny...and Battista not only gets healed, but gets put on the road to becoming President of the United States. Like "Time out of mind", I heard both these programs in my 70s original RMT listening days.
Three totally different stories (the first two poignant, and "Wheel" being a sort of a tilt to the buddhist/karma crowd with an interesting RMT flavor), but Hiram and his casting crew apparently liked Horton and Battista as combat buddies.

Brian, looks like you liked "Time out of mind". I'll be interested to see your take someday on "Wheel"...

The name of this episode is "An Occurance at Owl Bridge" or something close to that.

Actually, it's entitled "A Long Way from Home". Excellent episode. it ranks in my top five and I highly recommend it.
I really enjoyed "Time Out of Mind". I believe I'd put it in my top 10.
