1) What radio station(s) did you listen to CBSRMT on?
2) Is that station still on the air (with the same call sign), and what is the format now?
I listened in the 1970's primarily on KFH in Wichita, Kansas, and 50,000 watt KMOX in St. Louis.
KFH 1330 AM - http://www.1330kfh.com/ - now bills itself as "Hot Talk" with mostly syndicated programming as well as sports programming. They had a stint in the 80's where they tried country and western but that fizzled. Music on AM will never again compete with FM.
KMOX 1120 AM in St. Louis - http://www.kmox.com/ - is much the same as it was in the 1970's (in my opinion). KMOX is still a "big broadcast" type of station and is known as "The Voice of St. Louis" and is the flagship station of the St. Louis Cardinals Baseball Network.
I listened on KMOX when I could. I lived in Kansas about 450 miles west of St. Louis and that was a good place to receive the skywave propagation from St. Louis at night. But, power lines, etc., would at times limit reception - plus, I did not have a good antenna. I also enjoyed listening to KMOX because I come from a family of St. Louis Cardinals fans and there was always a lot of Cardinals chatter on KMOX and it always seemed like things sounded "bigger" than the local stations.
I also listened to CBSRMT on other clear channel stations that broadcast the program. I spent a lot of time turning the dial before bedtime listening to see what I could receive.
What station(s) did you listen on?

I listened to most of my broadcasts on 850 KOA in Denver. They also broadcast the Adventure Theater, and another (Sears Radio Theater) or something like that. They also rebroadcast OTR programs in the 70's/80's, but added in new commercials. Pretty cool. The station is still talk and news format. They were the Denver Bears minor league station until Colorado got a major league team. They are still the Broncos flagship station.
I can receive KOA almost anywhere in the U.S. at night, believe it or not. Don't know why. I have rebuilt several vintage radios, and when I get them up and running, they usually receive KOA better than any new radios I have owned hands down. That is the reception "acid test" for me.
I also listened to several broadcasts on KFAB, Omaha. I actually taped my first RMT on that very station when visiting my grandparent's house in eastern NE. As far as I know, they are still news/talk format as well. It was nice, because RMT came on an hour earlier in Colorado! Didn't have to stay up as late. Normally propagation was enhanced by clouds or a rainstorm, and that is usually when I taped KFAB broadcasts.
Other stations included Des Moines, Albuquerque and occasionally some stations from the Northwest. It really depended on how motivated I was to search for stations. Like I mentioned before, my friends shortwave was real cool when searching for RMT when we got that thing rolling. The nice thing was, stations broadcasted at different times, so I could tape the episode, then search for it on other stations later. I remember hooking my antenna up to my tent poles when I slept outside in the summer. That sometimes helped!

Ross,
I also listened to KOA when I could. My cousin was a well-known announcer and farm broadcaster on that station for over 20 years.

Yeah, he was very well-known during those years. I remember going to Denver on vacation with my parents and hearing him on the air and such. He was a fixture on the air for quite some number of years.

I lived between Indianapolis and Ft. Wayne Indiana and listened on WBAT in Marion, IN. I would also be able to listen to KMOX in St. Louis, but it would fade in and out on me. WBZ in Boston was another channel I listened to. It came on at 9:00 in Marion so I used to tape them and then listen to them later. If only I had kept those tapes.

I listened to CBSRMT at 10:30 pm on WBBM 780 in Chicago.
It's still on the air and still the same format News Radio.
In the late 80's, Chuck Shaden rebroadcast about 150 shows from the first few years on his old-time radio show also on WBBM.

I've also listened to WBBM extensively since it is on a clear channel. They used to boom into Kansas at night with no problem. smile.gif

I listened to WMOA, Marietta, Ohio. It had (and still has) a broadcast range of about 20 miles. It was a station that played what we call today "AM classics" such as that wonderful Terry Jacks song "Seasons in the Sun" and was part of the Cincinnati Reds Radio Network. Today, it is all talk. My father-in-law was a disc jockey, reporter, and program director there. Wish he'd have held on to the tapes.
The show kicked off every night at 11:07 PM and when I discovered it, my junior high academic career was wrecked because I was always exhauste from being up so late.

i too listened to cbsrmt on 780 am wbbm. though i'm not sure now if they started at 10 or 10:30. seems to me there was another station i could just barely get that also had the same episode on but at a different time. it might have been just a half hour time difference so i think i switched back and forth between the two. i thought that was pretty cool. i was more easily amused back then.

I listened to CBSRMT on KSL (1160) in SLC, Utah. KSL is one of the oldest radio stations in American, broadcasting since 1922. It is also a 50,000 watt clear chanel station. It can be heard from L.A. to Atlanta on a good night. I even picked up KSL one time all the way down in Miami, Florida.
Before I moved to SLC, Utah in 1975, I listened to CBSRMT on WIOD in Miami, Florida. But, like others on this thread, I enjoyed finding RMT on several stations often broadcasting the same episode at different times.
SPECIAL THANKS: Thanks to Vince (VGARCI) for all the help with getting setup to download the CBSRMT program. Thanks to Charlie for creating this site and bringing CBSRMT back to life!!!

I've heard KSL as well. Great station in the 70's. I never could get a great signal in Kansas but sometimes it boomed in.

I listened to CBSRMT on KSL from Salt Lake, KOA from Denver and if I remember right KNX from Los Angeles. I live about 40 miles south of Phoenix. Thirty years ago we were in the middle of the desert with lots of clear open sky for perfect radio. All three of these stations came in fairly well. KSL seemed to be the most consistent. We did not have a CBS station in the Phoenix area that carried RMT. I remember visiting my Grandparents in Utah and being thrilled that I had KSL 40 miles away. No fading signal those nights!
