Ross here.

Am working on converting and remastering my childhood RMTs + trades to MP3 right now. Have a bunch of downloaded stuff from various sites. Have done a bunch of trading over the years and met a lot of great people.

Recorded a bunch from 1979 - 1982 as a kid. Those are my faves.

Guess I'll sign up with streamload.

Late!

Hello Everyone!
I just wanted to say how glad I am that I found this site. I used to love staying up late and listening to CBSRMT when I was younger in Chicago, and I swear I felt the goosebumps return when I heard that squeaking door in the opening for the first time in probably 20+ years.

I grew up in Appalachia. "Real men" hunted, fished, and drove big pickup trucks. They didn't read or enjoy radio drama

I remember getting a round-robin slugging in the arm because my friends found out I read a non-fiction book for the fun of it.

Hi- I am Dave - User name - UNTIL NEXT TIME. I am a nursing student, father of my beloved Karina ( 3 and 1/2) and husband to Karissa. We live in the green hills of Oregon. I have strong interest in Paleontology, War History, Old Time Radio, older "Golden Age Mysteries", and Biology. I consider CBSRMT to be thoughtful, often terrific enertainment. I am very happy to have found this site and even more so to be a member among other fans. I find that radio fans are often especially nice people to get to know. - UNTIL NEXT TIME...........

Hello!!

My name is Richard, 37, and I am from Texas. I remeber listening to these shows in the 70's and had no idea they were available anywhere.

I also listen to other classic radio programs, like Jack Benny, Boston Blackie, Green Hornet, etc.

I am glad that such a site as this one exists to keep the great radio shows alive!

My name is John, I am from Jamul, Ca. I am a Process Control Engineer supporting several refineries. I like old Harley's, GTO's and OTR. The streamload sounds good, will sign up for that tomorrow. In some of the messages you said that there was a complete set available, who do I contact?

Hi Charlie,
I grew up in Denver in the 60's/70's listening to CBSRMT whenever I could find it, usually it wasin the back seat of the car driving home from somewhee with my family. Loved the shows, never got to listen to all of them and I eagerly look forward to exploring your archives! :D

I set up my account with Streamload, how do I start?

Gotta tell you I was pleasantly surprised to find that I wasn't the only one who wondered what happened to all that great radio. Many hours spent as a kid listening at night. I look forward to getting and sharing many great memories tied into the RMT :D

Not sure how to share the streamload account so here it is. "tom_hasbrouck" I'm just re-kindling my love for RMT and have no recordings. Not sure how things work, but I'm all ears. :117:

Tarawa40,
Welcome aboard! The rank images are a profile of a cat which is intended to be similar to the CBSRMT black cat theme. Charlie explained the rank images in one of the very first posts which you can read at:

http://www.iamoka.com/cbsrmt/forum/viewtopic.php?t=12&sid=63b307d59cdd168022e1a2868595e0fd

I see you are an engineer from your profile. Have you heard this one? The optimist says the glass is half full. The pessimist says the glass is half empty. The engineer says the glass is twice as big as it needs to be. ;)

Hi,

I remember listening to these shows on KSFO (560 in SF Bay Area) when I was definitely too young to stay up late enough to hear them. Like you, I taped a few of them (by holding a tape recorder up to my radio speakers) and listened to those over and over.

One of my favorites (have no idea of the title) had a character named Xavier Yardley Zenith. He had this crazy uncle who built a mausoleum with locks on the inside.

I have often wondered whether it was possible to hear the episodes again and I am really looking forward to downloading some of your files.

Thank you so much for making this possible.

Don
May 15th, 2003, 08:54 AM
Hi, my name is Don and I am in South Florida. I have a little experience in participating in forums, but this one is different.

I've been listening to CBSRMT since the 70s and was amazed to find out that there are so many other aficionados. I travel a great deal, and there is nothing that makes a long flight pass more comfortably than listening to OTR, especially CBSRMT.

I joined streamload as a freeloader and would happily pay the 5 bucks a month but don't yet understand exactly how it works. I tried to use the search service but found nothing. Maybe this isn't the right place to ask, but I would aprreciate a little hand-holding to get started. I do know how to download mp3 links if I find them online and would love to know where some are.

I see that you are in two of my favorite places. I have spent a lot of time in Maine (ever been to the Union Fair?) and less time in NB, but I love that too.

Anyway - it looks like a good friendly site, and I would welcome some idea as to how to gather some more mp3 files.

Thanks Charlie, for what has obviously been a lot of dedication on your part.

Don

Hi Don. Welcome to the group. We are glad to have you.

As far as Streamload, it's pretty simple. I posted an advanced tutorial in this thread: http://www.iamoka.com/cbsrmt/forum/viewtopic.php?t=144

If you find that not to answer all of your questions, just ask away and we'll try to help. Once you get started with it, you'll find it to be very simple and you can just walk away and let it run. You'll need to give us your [b:32571bb290]Streamload user name[/b:32571bb290] so we can send the files to your account.

I've never been to the Union Fair and I am not sure where that is. The first thing that popped into my mind was the Common Ground Fair in Unity. I go to that every year. I am working on publishing an online photo gallery of points around Maine and New Brunswick. That should be ready soon and I will get more photos this summer. I'll post when I have it ready.

Thanks Charlie,

I used to spend my summers in Maine and the Union Fair was one of the more notorious county fairs in August of each year. Union is a little town inland from Camden and Rockland along Rte. 17. I have talked to people from all over the state who knew about it!

I intended to give you my Streamload account name - it is [b:685b483868]teentour[/b:685b483868]

Any files that you could send my way would be greatly appreciated.

Are you also aware of anyplace that has links to mp3's of the shows? There used to be a site called Evan's CBSRMT site, but that seems to have gone away.

Thanks!

Don

[dramatic chord]

Come in... welcome. I'm Miles, from Winnipeg. Have you ever longed for the innocence of youth? Those halcyon days of carefree pursuits, when imagination ran wild, and nothing was beyond the realm of possibility? Of course. We all have. But how many of us have the chance to go back? Oh, I don't mean time travel, or manipulating the laws of physics. No no. I refer to something more real, more accessible. Here is a tale of one person who found that... and more.

[dramatic music]

I first started listening in 1980 when a new radio station came on the air in Winnipeg (CKWG 103.1). As I recall, it came on the air at Christmas and was playing all the best carrols from the big bands, jazz swingers, and the classic crooners. While only 12 years old at the time, I was a budding trumpet player and very much into that genre (12 going on 55 :D )

I had just inherited the old master bedroom after my parents had done renovations and built a new one. The closet was HUGE - just perfect for clothes on one side, and a hide-out fort on the other. Behind a heavy quilt hung over the curtain rod i stocked the space with the Chronicles of Narnia, a tiny lamp with a 4 watt bulb, and my clock radio, I would while away the nights in that magical land listening to Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Count Basie, and the Mills Brothers. [[god, no wonder I never had dates for the Junior High dances!]]

At 10:00 p.m. came the voice that pulled me from the written page, to the spoken word. An hour's auditory indulgence introduced me to mysterious characters, startled me with unimaginable conflicts, and chilling conclusions. I was hooked. It was a rare night that passed that didn't find me in that little sanctuary, or in bed, listening to E. G. Marshall bringing me another tale of the macabre.

Of course, 20 years later, thinking back on my youth, looking up memories and songs from the past, I gave it a shot... <search: RADIO MYSTERY THEATER> wow... WOW!! Within an hour I had a disc full of programs. The discs accompany me on road trips, walks, jogs, and quiet evenings when I want to unwind. Whenever I listen, I feel wrapped in a cocoon of warmth, am transported back to my little fort, and immerse myself in the story of the night.

Can youth be recaptured? Is it possible to relive our younger days? Mark Twain remarked, “The heart is the real Fountain of Youth.” If that’s true, then youth is perhaps more easily maintained than we suspect.

Until next time… pleasant dreams?

Hi Charlie,

I am enjoying downloading some of the files. Thank you again.

As regards Streamload, the downloading of the files you placed in my inbox is easy. But I am a bit confused about the availability of other files.

Is there somewhere in Streamload a directory of other (legal, of course) files (other OTR, music, etc) which I can search to see if there is something else in which I might be interested? ... or is Streamload only for downloading files that someone else has sent to my inbox - as you have done with the CBSRMT?

Thanks again!

Don,

No, they have the search function turned off (you can search your own files). The reason for this is surely legal (music, etc.). You have to hook up with people to get files. If you were looking for a particular thing, try searching Google for the words Streamload and whatever you were looking for and you might find a message board like this one that dealt with another subject.

Hello everybody! I am a newbie and this is my introductory post! My Name is Brad and I only recently discovered the CBRMT. I will qualify that by saying that I do have recolections of (probably) listening to CBRMT ocassionally in the 70s. But today, I can fully appreciate the wonderful worlds that it takes me to. I was doing Limewire searches for OTR and I downloaded some RMTs and was instantly hooked! I have about 50 episodes now and actively search for more! I have my favorites, including "Garden of the Moon", "The Orient Express" "Bound For East Haiti" and "The Cask of Amontillado"...anyway, it is wonderful to have discovered both the RMT and this forum! I have also signed up for Streamload and my userid is waxonwaxoff. thanks everyone!

My name is Michael, I grew up in Youngstown, OH listening to E.G. on WKBN-570. Like most of the group here, will be celebrating my 40th in
October. My daughter is 10 years old and enjoys the program almost as much as my sister and I did when we were younger. Her favorite episodes are [i:67aaf18c16]Ghost Story[/i:67aaf18c16] and [i:67aaf18c16]The Witches Almanac [/i:67aaf18c16]

My mom and dad introduced us to the program during the first year it aired, I was the only one that stayed with until it went off the air during my freshman year of college. I used to love listening on camping trips. Last weekend I was sitting on my deck listening to [i:67aaf18c16]Blizzard of Terror [/i:67aaf18c16]It was a moonless night and my skin started crawling and suddenly I was 12 years old again and everything seemed possible.

I have about 450 episodes right now and I currently working on completing 1974.

Its great to be among kindered spirits.
Michael

PS: Charlie, what part of ME are you from. We visited the Bath area a couple of times and plan on spending a week in the Rockland area the August.

Greetings, my name is Delaine, and I'm joining the forum for myself and my husband Ed. I listened to a lot of CBSRMT growing up in Denver during the 70s - it was a staple of many sleepovers with my girlfriends. My husband Ed remembers being very devoted to the program in the mid-70s as well; he grew up in Framingham, MA. We are raising two boys and would like to introduce them to the thrill of these great programs as soon as they can handle the scare-factor. Glad to have found you all!

Delaine & family

So pleased to hear of your history with the program, and glad to have more interested ears to share responses to the programs.

I attended a conference a couple months ago and the keynote speaker was talking about how kids today do not have the same kind of auditory skills, or appreciation for radio drama. There certainly is a skill to listening to, and 'imaging' the scenes of a radio drama in your own particular way.

My child is still gestating - 3 more months before birth, but I can't wait for the day when he/she will appreciate the joys of tucking into bed and creating the images of a fabulous story in his/her own imagination!

Glad to have you ahnd your husband aboard, and look forward to sharing many episodes with your family in the future smile.gif

Thanks for the welcome -

Vince, my streamload account name is rmaxharrj - I'd love to get the programs as a Father's Day gift to Ed. He would be very happy indeed! Is the account name all that is needed?

Miles, I agree that kids are more visually oriented these days compared to when I was a girl. It's definitely important to help them develop their mental 'imaging' skills so that they can entertain themselves with books and through radio/tapes. I figure CBSRMT and other programs (Lone Ranger?) will be a great way to work on this. BTW, very best wishes for your new baby on the way!

Miles,

Yes....I understand.. My wife sometimes listens to them, but her main interest in the episodes is that her dad likes them so I have encoded many to audio cd's for him.... it seems like waste of a disk to only drop that on there so he gets the occassional shadow or sears radio theater on this disks as well.
I also attempt to listen to two episodes a day, mostly in the morning.. my wife will sometimes appear not to be listening but then sometimes asks questions, (ex: did that lady fall off a cliff just now, or was she pushed?), thats when I know she is secretly hooked.
Nice to meet you by the by... smile.gif

Greetings all,
How vivid  the memory of certain things. E.G. Marshall's voice, the creaking of the door, the screech of the gas-tube radio I used to listen to as a kid, lying in bed, of course, searching for the radio waves. Age 8.

So glad to see the memories are being kept alive and well by you good folks. I'd love to pass them along to my kids. We've got a road trip coming up. Would like nothing better than to introduce these great artistic renditions to them, and have them experience this nostalgic era, when times were a lot simpler.

Hello everyone,

I just found this forum today and had to register right away.

Unlike many of the members of this forum, I never heard any of the CBSRMT episodes while it was on the air. A while back, a friend directed me to Bob Cook's excellent site. I listened to one episode and was instantly hooked. Unfortunately, the site went down shortly after. I had been able to listen to only about a dozen episodes. The worst of the withdrawal symptoms have now subsided, but I still miss the show. Can it be my suffering is over? :D

I have set up an account with Streamload. My ID is snyderrd.

I myself grew up listening to Old Time Radio and CBS Mystery Theater on radio station KSFO in San Francisco. I have about 50 of the shows, but I would love to burn the whole series onto CD's. If anyone would share those with me, I'd be very grateful!

Hello,
I am from Kentucky, and have been listening to CBSRMT for 3 years now. A radio station in Cincinnati,OH plays Radio Mystery Theater every night !! It is great. I have about 60-70 shows on mp3, and would like to increase my volume. I especially love the Fred Gwynne shows, and the ones with Mercedes McCambridge. If you are ever in the Cincinnati area, tune in to 91.7 weekdays at 7pm, and Sunday nights at 11pm.
Thanks!!

Welcome aboard Hoss!

We have quite the following here in the Midwest! Unlike many on this board, I did not listen to CBSRMT as a child. I actually stumbled onto it on WVXU 91.7 at 7pm each evening just a few years ago! I can only imagine what an experience this show must have been to listen to as a child

Fortunately, there are many very generous people on this board who would gladly help you finish your collection. Please join us in listening to the show of the week and sharing your thoughts!

I'm a 22 year old new fan of OTR. I discovered it in January when I came across a couple of Live 365 streams. I was immediately hooked. I enjoy many series in various genres.

I have been a fan of the RMT since it's first broadcast. I would listen with all the lights out and it would scare me to death. And I couldn't wait to listen to the next episode.

I moved in the late 70's to an area that didn't broadcast the RMT shows, so there are hundreds I haven't even heard!

Greetings from the San Joaquin Valley.

I remember listening to CBSRMT in the 1970's, at first on KNX in Los Angeles, 180 miles away. A short time later, KMJ in Fresno began airing the show at 10 PM every night.

I only managed to keep one recording. I don't know the air date or the title, but it was about an art student who goes to Vienna for the summer and happens upon a missing Lenardo da Vinci painting. I can remember two characters, Paul Wyatt (or Wyant), the student, and Sibilla, the daughter.

I have misplaced this tape :(

I have also started a Streamload account - kf6kmy

I am new, and from Cincinnati. Untill today Cincinnati's WVXU was the only station that carreied RMT. They said they had legal problems, that really upset me, because they just got a lot of new shows, that haven't been heard since the 70's when they were on CBS.

I listened to CBSRMT as a kid on a transistor radio faithfully every night that it was on. It aired at 9:07 usually but baseball season was brutal making me stay up until 11:07. I doubt very much that my parents knew I was up so late waiting for Mystery Theater to begin but I was quiet so other than losing sleep I caused no trouble by being up that late. ;)

I've also got fond memories of riding home from an evening of skiing with a nearly full episode of Mystery Theater depending on how far away we went to ski. (In MN there is night skiing since they are only ski *hills* and relatively easy to light vs. real moutains!) We'd often sit in the car waiting for a commercial before racing into the house and getting the radio ready to finish the story.

I was one of the only people I knew that listened (or had even *heard* of CBSRMT). I had heard that a "grown up" in my town had recorded every episode and sure wished I knew that family enough to go ask to listen to some! I wish I knew what became of that family. I have the feeling he had some serious recording equipment if you KWIM.

Ever since adulthood, I've been searching for recordings of my beloved Mystery Theater. I think I saw some in a set of OTR that was offered in a discount store but the price was pretty steep. I kicked myself for years for not buying it because I would've gladly paid that price in later years but never saw such an offering again. Any time I'd see an OTR collection in the store I'd scan for Mystery Theater.

About 2 years ago I decided to do an online search since there are so many things to be found online that were otherwise unknown. (I seem to be one who remembers a lot of things nobody else knew existed, but that's a whole 'nother story.) I found the mousetrap site and desperately wanted to download the shows of the week. Well, my computer at the time was pretty old (running Win 3.11) so I couldn't get the right version of Real Player to even hear it. After getting another computer I was finally able to listen to an episode (which I did in our kitchen--where the computer is--in the dark because that was how it always was when it was on). Maybe 6 months later I decided to search eBay. I found two people who were selling CD's that either had 1 episode or a few episodes mixed in with other OTR. I snapped those up. Shortly after getting those, I searched again and somehow found the YahooGroup for CBSRMT. I've gotten "hooked up" with a full set in CD form, had someone Streambeam me a full set as well as GMRAT (which is another thing I thought maybe I had imagined since *nobody* had ever heard of that one).

Even *more* recently someone helped me (landsharke, you out there?) soup up my computer enough for it to be able to handle burning CD's of episodes so I can update the ones that aren't the greatest sound quality.

I was looking for more episodes to update my set with and was pointed to this site among others. Now I see there are some more related episodes that are beckoning me. LOL. (My streamload is storytellermommy if anyone is feeling the urge to send me any programs--I have the 1399 CBSRMT and the 52 GMRAT so no need to send those.)

I'm always excited to find even more people who remember CBSRMT and enjoyed listening to it. So far the only people (other than my family) I know who know CBSRMT existed are online!

Whew, longwinded (typical for me!!!) but that's my intro!

Storytellermommy,

God bless and welcome! My wife's gotten to be an SAHM (unfortunately not from our children's birth but since they were young) and she's built up her own business as well. More power to you.

When your kids get older (or maybe now) you may find yourself telling some RMT episodes as stories to them. I'm amazed but...my wife and I were talking with our oldest, our daughter who just started 7th grade last week, and I found myself quoting some lines from the "Show of the week" on these forums a couple of weeks ago, an episode entitled "The fall of Gentryville".

There are a lot of fascinating things one can glean from these shows.

Hello - I'm just another CBSRMT fan reliving memories of growing up in the 70's....it is uncanny how many posts relive the same circumstances of clandestine nightly meetings with this great program. The challenge of hiding the rendevous from Mom and Dad, coupled with the excitement of the tales created a situation that was doomed to be discovered - Mom and Dad, in what I concluded was surely the result of the Almighty's interference, figured out that I actually WANTED to go to bed. My father later (20 years later) admitted that the source of this revelation was actually my little sister. Discovered, but undaunted, I continued to listen for a couple of more years, and then, like the old soldier, it just faded away. Sis, if you're reading this, [u:d97f42590f]I'm[/u:d97f42590f] the one that bought all those noisy toys for your kids, complete with a year's supply of batteries. You r torment is courtesy of the CBSRMT.

Hello...I didn't grow up listening to CBSRMT. I am 27, so I was a too young when the show was airing to appreciate it. Just a couple of yrs ago I was searching the internet for otr (abbott and costello or something), since I was getting tired of listening to the radio and cd's. I ended up getting hooked on the Shadow and some of the Sci-fi shows (x-minus one, dimension x). Then I ran across CBSRMT and became hooked!
As is turns out my parents would listen to the show on the radio while driving in the car back from my grandparents house in brooklyn (not sure what the radio station was). My parents had loved the show back then so I recently started making them cd's of the handful of shows that I have.
I'd love to get more shows and would like to someday have the whole series. I'm going to set up a streamload account so I would greatly appreciate any shows someone would be willing to send me. If you're interested in any otr of the shadow, x-minus one, dimension x and space patrol, I'd gladly send you some shows.

Welcome John,

If your parents listened driving back from Brooklyn, chances are they were listening to WOR. There are dozens of shows taped from that station. Your parents will not only hear a lot of shows that are going to bring back memories, the commercials and announcers like Fulton Lewis will also stir memories.

Set up your streamload account and we'll get the shows to you pronto.

Hi - I am currently 39, and grew up listening to CBSRMT on WCCO 830AM... Minneapolis, MN at 9:07 each nite after Honest to Goodness. I kinda got frustrated in the summer months as the Twins were playing and then it would be on at 11 or so when it would play... but I could also tune into News Radio 78, WBBM Chicago to listen to that creaking door and EG Marshall... When I went to college in '82 in Marshall, MN I had a more difficult time tuning in.. Couldnt seem to find it anymore... Looks like it was near the end.

Also, summers our family would travel out to Massachusetts to visit Moms family... there you could here it Columbus, Detroit, Chicago... it was awesome... The door creaking... Welcome, I'm EG Marshall ---- Pleasant..... Dreeeammsssssssss... Oh the shivers but good stuff maynard...

I still am facinated by the drama of it all and the series. I like to listen to Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Kellior... Kinda like CBSRMT, he does have some drama in it... but also Sat and Sunday nites 'CCO has Adventure Theatre on... out of Washington - only half hour stories, but its still the drama. Adventures of Harry Nile or Sherlock Holmes... there is still nothing like Hymen Browns Mystery Theatre...

As it happens, I got to be a DJ at the downtown radio station during college, RMT did that for me... and I want to try to get back into doing voice overs... I have a soothing voice, and hopefully will find a way to put together a demo cd for production advertisements or radio drama.... (my degree was business with computers) or even reading books.

I have read the streamlining and hope to be able to download some dramas... unfortunately I am starting from ground zero... no programs whatsoever... I am willing to buy the cd's and pay for shipping if someone would help me tx them to cd. I just need to get a job right now too. I had an interview today, and pray I get the job... its been a tough year out. I dont have an mp3 player, and just want to play them on my stereo cd or stick them in the car cd player... any chance to being able to do that?

My favourite episode was Christmas Carole... its the one I remember best. And I loved hearing Fred Gwynn... and loved trying to guess who wrote the script...

Thank you for allowing me to share my memories. God bless you in your endeavor here... Until next time.... Pleasant.... Dreamssss....

Hi Richard,

Welcome to the group. Sounds like you are in the same age range as many of us and have shared many of the same experiences. I am in radio myself so I know how that is too.

We'll share programs with you for free. Don't buy any as that is illegal. You can download from Streamload or if you need CD's, maybe someone can help you there too.

To play in your car or on your stereo you would need to convert them from mp3 to .wav files for burning to CD. It's not too hard to do but time-consuming in a way.

We look forward to your participation!

Welcome to the forum and thanks for sharing your memories of CBSRMT. Many CD players now will support the use of CD-R and CD-RW discs - if you're converting from mp3 to Audio CD you'd need 1399 discs... Thanks, Vince. It's great when my "aging" brain comes up with a bit of trivia like that.

Brian, it was a tv commercial from the 70's. Not sure how long it ran, but it was long enough for kids that age to all be saying it. LOL I asked my dh if he remembered the commercial (he's from CA) and he did. I wasn't sure if Malt-0-Meal reached that far away since it was a rather small company at the time.

Hi Richard,
I remember that Malt-O-Meal commercial, the little kid won't eat his cereal and his dad is reading the paper and tossing out remarks ... "good for ya Maynard ... tastes good too ... Good Stuff, Maynard."
I grew up in Madison and used to listen on WBBM. It came in clear as a bell so I'm never surprised how far that signal reaches.

Hi,
I'm Birdie, from Ohio. I was first introduced to CBSRMT when I got married in 1978. My husband always listened to them as bedtime stories since they first started. We were both kinda depressed when we couldn't find a radio station that played them anymore after early 1983.
We had a few on cassette, but we wore out the tapes.
So, we were thrilled to be in the age of computers with a good internet connection, and to be able to listen once again.
It once again is a nightly ritual. We now have some on cd in MP3 format, that we play on the DVD player.

hi all!
i grew up in Pittsburgh, PA. Listening to mystery theater was a family event in my house. We each had our own clock/radios, (my dad got them as free gifts, long story) and we would all go to bed listening to it. We would take turns using the bathroom and getting ready for bed, but when we heard the opening music start, then we would brush our teeth in seconds and be running off to our beds. Snuggling up in our covers was half the fun and part of the experience. The funny part was in the morning, we would all try to find someone who stayed awake and heard the ending! I can't tell you how many times we fell asleep and were left in the dark. That is such a funny memory for me, the fact we would get so engrossed in the story that we would fall asleep before it ended.

Anyway, now i'm a mom of four in NJ. My husband grew up outside Boston listening to it as well. When we first moved here we would go slowly through the radio stations figuring somewhere in NY some station is playing E.G Marshall's intro, but to our dismay we never found it. I am so excited in finding this website! I cleaned up the computer room and got to listen to two stories the other day. Thank you so much! What a blast!

I also loved hearing Fred Munster's voice, and my other favorite was Tammy Grimes. My favorite stories are the mysteries and horror ones. They really send my imagination flying. If there is anyway to recommend some good ones or send me some, that would great! I could never remember show titles; it goes along with my inability to remember names and song titles and book titles, etc.

Looking forward to listening along with you all.

Barb,
It's great to have you join us. Your story was fun to read but you didn't mention how many siblings you had so I'm wondering how many members of your family were listening to the programs. I still fall asleep in the middle of a gripping programs so I can certainly relate to the frustration of "what the heck happened?"

As for recommended programs, I would recommend "The Rise and Fall of the Fourth Reich". I wouldn't call it a horror program but it's my all time favorite. If you don't the program, you can download it from www.streamload.com/vgarci (http://www.streamload.com/vgarci) (you don't need to have a streamload account to get this file). I'd also invite you to join our Show of the Week forum. We've reviewed a number of excellent programs and it's great to see what others think of the shows. We don't always agree but I think we all learn from each other.

Barb,
I just ran into a great reason to check out the listening logs. Brian1984_2001 writes some great reviews and he has the following to say about the last program he reviewed (I only clipped a portion of his review):

0591 The White Wolf

Original Air Date: 770126

Writer: Ian Martin

Stars: Norman Rose, Kristopher Tabori, Jada Rowland, Ann Shepherd, Paul Tripp

Plot: A family living in the remote wilderness is haunted and stalked by a werewolf. The children have strong suspicions as to who the werewolf really is.

Quality: Good to excellent Great sound except for a tiny bit of station crossover for about ten seconds. Outro intact.

[b:8b45be2f0d]Rating: 9.0 What a great horror story! Great characters and a fantastic script that builds the suspense and tension wonderfully. Martin at his best! Highly recommended.[/b:8b45be2f0d]

Hi Charlie,

I am a new member on this site and think it's great. Thanks for providing a forum for all us CBSRMT fans. :D

I grew up in Kansas as well, in Topeka, and began listening to RMT when it premiered in 1974. I was 12. I remember that (probably like many other fans of the show) I had to sneak a radio and earphone under my covers at night to listen to the show as my parents didn't allow me up that late on school nights. (I had one of those 70's ball radios--it was blue and it had two flat silver tuning dials that gave the appearance of eyes on a face, like a sort-of blue pac-man. It also had a chain attached for carrying. Very impractical, but very groovy.) I remember that my favorite episode during those years was one based on a short story by Mary Shelley. It was awesome--- truly frightening and completely engaging. It transported me to another world in the way only audio drama can do. It also kept me awake all night! But it's stayed with me all these years.

I was only able to listen to the show on and off for the first few years, and then lost track of it completely. I had no idea the series had even run as long as it had until I began rediscovering it online a little over a year ago. I've listened to many, many episodes since then , searching for that Mary Shelley episode, the name of which I couldn't remember. I've discovered as an adult that the series is not quite as I'd remembered it from my childhood. Some of the episodes are inspired, some good, and some---well, pretty darn bad. But, hey, that's the nature of the creative process. Overall the quality of the episodes is amazing, considering the show was produced on a daily basis. Anyway, whaddaya know--just today I finally listened to the Mary Shelley story for the first time since I was 13. (The Transformation, as I'd recently discovered.) It was EXACTLY as I'd remembered it all these years, just as fresh and exciting as it was back then. Really brilliant. And a real testament to the series and everyone involved with it.

I look forward to listening to many more episodes in the future (There certainly is a wealth to choose from!) discovering many more gems, and, hopefully--eventually-- collecting the entire series in mp3 format.

Until next time, pleasant dreams...!
-steve

PS: Favorite voice from the show, bar none-- Mercedes McCambridge!

Hi there folks, I am Rich aka vocal. I have been a fan of radio all my life, but don't do it for a living, I am more of a hobbiest. i started DJ-ing back at my high school station in Saskatoon, Canada. I have since delved head first into internet radio, and host a weekly FM show on a community station. My internet station, website, and weekly FM show were all recently nominated for media outlet of the year at the 2002 Prairie music awards here in Canada. Quite a feat for something totally non-profit, and all for the love of music and radio.

I wanted to broadcast the entire War of the worlds show on Halloween on my station as a treat for my listeners, and decided to check out some more classic radio drama. I found some old CBSRMT shows on the net, downloaded and they reminded me of being a kid in bed with my walkman, staying up WAY too late to hear these amazing dramas, horrors, and mysteries. I'm 33, and I just got hooked on these things all over again. hopefully, if I can't get into too much trouble, I would love to have a weekly spotlight on my station of classic radio stuff.

Glad I found you folks, and I look forward to interacting.

It works well for me so far. the best part, is the ability to have a bunch of themes, so you can change the whole look of your site without changing the content. I was excited to find this forum to find missing episodes as well as to talk with others members who love CBSRMT as much as I do! My favorite episodes so far are The Thing in The Cave, The Blue Door and Mirror, Mirror. I am looking for three particular episodes: The Horror of Dead Lake (1976), The House on Chimney Pot Lane, and The Golden Cauldron

As I don't have streamload yet, if anyone one out there has these available, could you send them to me? MP3 is best but any format will do. I can't wait to hear them again! Thanks- Heather

Hi Charlie, Vince and everyone,

My name is Lee. I started listening in 1974 to CBSRMT from episode ONE in Miami, Fla on WIOD (I think?). I moved to SLC in 1975 and continued listening to RMT on KSL (a 50,000 watt clear channel station I had already picked up in MIAMI one perfect night).

Like many others on this thread, I love old things. As I type this, I'm watching the original documentary of the MEMPHIS BELLE on the WINGS cable channel. I'm watching that while glancing at my Franklin Mint model of the MEMPHIS BELLE sitting next to the T.V. Yes, I like old things!

FYI: The MEMPHIS BELLE was the first (and one of few) B-17 bombers to complete the required 25 missions over Germany in WWII, after which the plane and its crew could and did go home.

CBSRMT was the last and perhaps best regularly scheduled offering from the GOLDEN AGE of RADIO. HY Brown, E.G. Marshal and so many of those who worked on RMT had been involved in Suspense and other great radio shows. They brought everything they ever learned about radio to RMT and made it the best ever (and sadly, the last).

I could not believe my luck when I found this forum! After getting a few of the old shows, all the memories of almost 30 years ago came back to me. Like others here, I often used to fall asleep listening to RMT (so I'll FINALLY get to find out the endings to so many shows!)

Thanks so much to Vince (VGARCI) for his help with getting setup to download all the CBSRMT program.

And, thanks to Charlie for creating this wonderful site and bringing CBSRMT back to life!!!

Hi.

I've been a working actor here in Los Angeles for more than ten years now.

These shows always remind me of how much we have lost ( and can gain again!) in the quality of acting in movies and TV.

These actors that we love so much on these shows were all theater trained! They had to learn to use their voice before their face.

Since Brando made "Method Acting" so popular, almost every famous actor since him has tried the "scratch and mumble" style of performance.

I love the tone of the voices on the show as well as the CLARITY of the words. Its something I have always strived for in my acting. I have sometimes been made fun of by other actors who think my words sound to sharp. But I am always rewarded by fans who love to hear what they paid for!

Thanks for these message boards. It's good to know lots of people like this show as much as I do.

BTW. can anyone send me some episodes to my Streamload account?

I only have 3 episodes but I'd really like to have lots more.

If any one has the time, my Streamload account is:

I haven't heard these shows for YEARS! I used to listen to them in bed at night with my sister nearby in case either of us got scared.

MKN,
You posted perfectly. Welcome and it's great to hear we have the CBSRMT in common! You didn't mention your Streamload account ID or I'd send the files to you right away. The download process is quite easy and as for converting to WAV files, that's probably not necessary unless you have something specific in mind. You can listen to these programs in the more compact MP3 format if you've got a computer and some free software (such as Winamp), or if you've got a cd player that supports the MP3 format, or if you've got an MP3 player of some sort or.... Enough of that. Welcome and I hope the shows bring back some terrific memories for you.

Jay,
At 10 gigs, it will take you 2 months worth of the $9.95 to get them all because the total CBSRMT collection is about 14 gigs. If you download more than 10 gigs this month, you can buy "extra" downloads but I suspect it's almost equivalent to signing up for a second month.

Hello Everyone -

Another newbie here. My name's Doug. I'm a long-time ham radio operator, love OTR, and still believe that real radios glow in the dark smile.gif . Over the past few months I've put together a "starter" collection of OTR programs. (I'm trying to get a representative sample of as many different programs as possible.) And that's how I found CBSRMT and eventually found my way here. And I'm so glad I did. Now I'm hooked on CBSRMT - never listen to the "other stuff" anymore. And my wife is hooked on CBSRMT. And I have one of the neighbor's listening to CBSRMT. I stocked up on a new supply of CD-R's today so I'm ready whenever Streamload's ready (grrrrrr)...Great stuff!

Doug,
Looks like we have a convert! So, I've got to ask, were you old enough to listen to these programs when you were a kid? I'm just about to turn 40 and part of the intrigue is that these programs scared me to death as a kid.

W2DR
October 23rd, 2003, 12:59 AM
Boy, am I old enough smile.gif . I never heard the programs when they were originally aired though. My radio memories are more from the late 40's and early 50's before we had a TV in the house. Both my parents loved to listen to anything on the radio and I grew up with our trusty 1939 Zenith console running from dawn until bedtime (what a great radio that was). When CBSRMT was being aired I was splitting my time between San Francisco and New York and raising two kids. There just wasn't much time in the evenings for "radio listening" as my grandmother used to call it. So, I'm now trying to make up for lost time. I've set up an FM transmitter so I can listen to OTR on any of the many FM sets around the house. (I would rather have done it AM but there is a real problem here with powerline noise and it just kills a low-power AM signal.) And both cars are MP3-equipped. Now I just have to find the time to listen in-between all the downloading.....And many thanks to you, Vince, for the help here. This is a marvelous site and I'm so glad to see the efforts to preserve the OTR traditions and treasures. The files on Streamload still haven't shown up yet (ID Trip_Lane) but I'm beginning to understand a bit about how fickle Streamload can be at times. It'll all come together..always does.

Doug,
Great story and it's great to have you aboard. Keep in mind that Charlie created this site less than a year ago and since then, almost a person a day has joined to get the CBSRMT programs. It really suprises me when people who didn't hear the original run find out about the shows and are just as hooked as I was as a kid.

Thanks for the welcome Charlie. You've done a wonderful job with this site and should be very proud of it. It's just great to find all the RMT series readily available. And so many good folks to share it with. I can now spend much more time listening and much less time hunting for new episodes. I don't know when I'm going to find time this winter for any DXing though... smile.gif

Hello Everyone,

I only started listening to CBSRMT while working over the summer doing design work for a company in Calgary, AB, Canada. I am only 29, so while my parents remember the series, it is new to me. Oh, I should mention I found out about them by listening to streaming audio on winamp.com and Eric's Modest Compendium of Neat Stuff. I've also grown fond of The Shadow, Lone Ranger and Boston Blackie. My streamload ID is: GlenBo but I only have a trial account for now. Do I need to upgrade it?

Thanks everyone, and I hope to share some stuff I find with the rest of you.

Best Regards,
Glen

welcome,
glad you're here. i'm not very keen on this current crop of movie actors. they seem to be a bit short on talent. it's good to hear you're breaking out of the mold.

This is my intro - I grew up listening to CBSRMT in the seventies, like so many others here.

I remember going to the movies on Saturday nights (Katherine Hepburn reruns!), and riding home with my mom, and Radio Mystery Theater creaking its awful door through WCCO at 9:00 PM sharp.

Still gives me the creeps!

I used to listen to RMT on Sundays at 11:00pm on a public radio station and I have looked to purchase tapes of the broadcasts and then it hit me, search the internet. I did and this is one of the sites I found.

I am hoping to get some mp3's of the shows so I can share RMT with my family. I have two sisters and a brother that also grew up listening to the broadcasts.

Thanks for hosting this site I look forward to once again enjoying RMT.

Matt

PS if anyone knows the name of the episode that had kids chanting ring around the rosey... I would greatly appreciate it. One of my sisters cannot hear anyone whisper that to this day because of the episode.

Welcome Matt.

The episode you are looking for is #13 A Ring of Roses. It was broadcast 740118.

A spooky episode as I recall.

hi......I grew up in Farmington Ct and used to listen to WPOP in Newington (where I found my wife).......I used to always be in bed ready for the nights mystery....actually my station used to play one on my favourite songs right before the RMT......it was by the Doobie Brothers "Black Water"...oh boy what memories...........I used to try to record the mysteries if I was real tired but of course I only had a cheap recorder back then.........but they would always give you a preview of the next nights drama, so if I liked one I would tape it to make sure I got the ending....it was FRUSTRATING to me to fall asleep on them and not know how it ended.....how mad I was the next morning.......and thrilled to tell my mom about the drama too...............but sometimes I was SCARED to DEATH..........anyhow I am so happy to find that they are available today.........I downloaded a few off my P2P service I use but I have dial up and I only get about a 36 kps connection, on good nights!!!!!! so it is so hard for me to get these dramas......I would appreciate any help, I would be all so grateful for any ......I have a mp3 player and I have found that in that form you can fit ALOT more on a CD......I just started to let my kids listen to them.......they are really excited.........anyhow, I will be reading alot here to catch up!!!!!! my goal is to get the entire collection, so if someone is able to send me anything, I WOULD so much appreciate it so VERY much..........

Roger,
Welcome aboard. You're in great company and though it might be slow with a dial up connection, many of us would be glad to send the files if you create a streamload account.

I really miss Radio Mystery Theater. I used to listen to it all the time when I was growing up in Maryland in the '70s. Generally I would listen to it as I fell asleep at night. Recently I started listening to the old Inner Sanctum series (purchased from ******.com). I was totally blown away when I heard "Directed by Himan Brown", The Creaky Door, and "Pleasant Dreams?". Was Radio Mystery Theater essentially the successor to Inner Sanctum?

I'm very much looking forward to hearing the old shows (just posted a request in the other forum). I have a new mp3 player for the car, and it will make my long daily commute [b:ea54708e01]much [/b:ea54708e01]more tolerable.

As for other background -- I'm a 40 year old software guy, working in the Seattle area. My wife doesn't like me listening to old-time-radio as we're falling asleep, but she tolerates it because the alternative is AM radio :).

DJ,
Welcome! How long is your commute? I live in a small town where my commute is about 3.5 minutes. Sometimes, I wish it were longer so I could listen to programs and unwind from the day.

I'm on the road about an hour and a half a day. I wish my commute were only 3 minutes... With a shorter commute, you could still put aside that amount time and listen to RMT every day, with the advantage of avoiding the road noise!

Thanks for the files. I'm downloading the first batch now!

Hi, everybody, my name's Bubba Z.
I'm a big fan of OTR.
I was a kid in the 1970's, and remember CBSRMT fondly. I remember one night in, hmm, '77 or '78, my older sister and I rode around and around our grandmother's town late one night, listening to the show. We couldn't go home until we heard if the evil Nazi killed the hero or not. Wonder which episode that was...
I've set up a Streamload account, but I've got to read up on how to use it.
Then I'm going to read up on folks' favorite episodes, and try to find some good 'uns.
Thanks, y'all.
Bubba Z
