Yes, Welcome Morton!!

I really like listening to intact commercials too. It helps re-set the stage for the time and place when RMT was a "going concern".

I see you're in Kansas now, but you don't list us as a place where you made recordings. I worked at WIBW TV-AM-FM in Topeka during the late 70s, and we ran the show after the 10 pm CBS news.

Cheers!

These days I too appreciate the old commercials and especially the news breaks. I know the main reason I'd sit with my finger poised over the "pause" button in those days was . . . without commercials the shows would almost always fit on one side of a 90-minute tape; actually the tapes were usually 46 or more minutes per side.

I like some of the public service commercials that crop up pretty often on those tapes. But the best are the 5-10 minute news summaries that usually immeadiately followed CBSRMT. On a couple of my tapes I know I've got the radio station interrupting the program with a news flash. One is of a fire at some regional midwest location; another is annoucing the death of Hubert H. Humphrey.

Oh yeah, and about favorite commercials . . .

There was a series of commercials (I have some on tape) selling "Posture-pedic" mattresses, featuring a reoccuring comedy duo; sort of a "Bob and Ray" team. One of my favorites went something like this:

(crickets chirpping)
1st voice: "I really don't think we should be out here, looking in the window, watching Mr. and Mrs. Smith sleeping."
2nd voice: "Well then let's climb in! See how comfortable they are . . ." etc.
The couple wakes up, they serve coffee, etc.

It was a hoot! Anybody else know this set of radio ads?

Hi,
I'm very interested in CBS Radio Mystery Theater. Like others, I too listened to these when I was a kid, though I usually fell asleep before the ending! Anyway, I'd like to share these with my children.

It seems like if you have a streamload account, you generiously transfer some/all. I have the free streamload account, dmclennan, which is limited to 10GB. Could you please send some or as many as you can. I'll download and then request the rest.

I'll let the group know how my kids take to this!
Thanks

I was chicagomilam awhile back. I don't know whether I lost my password or anything.

Anyhow I'm looking to collect more old-time radio shows and get back into that hobby as I've gotten into too much drama on regular message boards talking about RL.

What's changed around here? smile.gif

The first time I heard CBSRMT I was driving along Route 6 on Cape Cod headed for Boston. It was a rainy night and there was not much traffic. I was pushing the buttons on the radio when I suddenly heard the creaking door followed by E.G Marshall's compelling voice. When lightning flashed outside I knew I was in for the best ride to Boston I ever had. I doesn't get any better than that.

Hello,

First heard MT when I was a 12 year old living in Pittsburgh, PA in 1976 & got a clock radio which was the cool thing for pre-teens back then. I listened fairly regularly until about mid-1980, then sporadically until about mid-1981.

Never would have thought back then that I would still be thinking about MT more than a quarter-of-a-century later and using something called "the internet" to hear it again.

I can still remember some of the commericals and the theme songs for these commercials that were played between MT station breaks.

I had a TV in my room & still didn't watch it often( prime time TV was dull even back then; now it's just bad!) and instead used to like to listen to MT while visualizing in my mind how the settings in the eerie stories looked.

I can't believe how long ago this was. So much is different now(lots better, lots worse) I may as well be living on a different planet, because going to another planet is more likely to happen than to ever connect(no camcorders back then) to that time of my life back then.

Most of the time I was in bed while listening to MT and even when I was older (about 17) I still didn't watch TV and would rather listen to MT.

I'm new and have yet to hear a show.

Hi Everyone,
What a great site! I adore old radio shows and what started my interest was RMT. I remember finding it while I was in high school in New Jersey. I was going around the dial looking for something besides music (weird I know for a teenager) and stumbled upon it. I was hooked from then on. I lived in Denver, Colorado in the 80's and they had an old time radio program on Sundays. I just love listening to radio theater...TV and movies are fine but they tie you to the couch! I love to be able to do other things and still use my imagination. I wish that someone would do that kind of programming now. We have TVLand, why not a radio station that plays radio reruns? Its great to see that there are others like me out there! Most people that I've talked to about this subject kind of look at me like "What are you talking about???".

Hi,

My name is Rob and I used to listen to RMT as a kid driving between Illinois and Ohio on trips to visit my grandparents. I always loved those shows and the suspense they created. Such a great way to occupy your brain when the only view out the window is infinite fields of corn and soybeans.

Anyway, I am really interested in getting my hands on some of those old shows. What is my best option for doing this?

I was so happy to run into cbsrmt again.I missed the shows so much.I started listening to the shows everynight starting about 1977 through to 1980.When i lived in the hills of northen california, with no TV or electricity.
In 1980 I moved to alaska,Kodiak Island and couldnt pick up any station that played cbsrmt.Well sometimes i could get a very weak station. So I kind of lost track and forgot about the show.
Then one night I was thinking of the show and looked it up on the net.Wow! I never knew so many people felt as i did about this show.I enjoyed this radio show much more then TV.
Now I have started my family on the show.instead of turning on the TV.we listen to some of the old cbsrmt.
I was hopeing joining the site that i can record some of the shows so i can listen to them when im out fishing on the boat.Since im a commercial fisherman i spend a lot of time on the boat.
thank you for leting me join your group

I grew up listening to the CBS Mystery theater in the mid 70's. It came on @ 10:07 p.m. on WREC. I would listen to this before I went to bed on School nights.
Mom and Dad really enjoyed the shows as well. We would pick-up it up on the radio sometimes while vacationing. I just recently purchased a 27 CD set in MP3 format on CDR cd's :( . Bummer...I thought they would be in audio format/MP3 so that I could use them in my Car or MP3 player in Bedroom. Anyone know of a way around this other then having to play them through a computer? :(

Thanks

It was not that long ago that I was searching and searching and trying to Kazzaa all these episodes. I finally gave up very frustrated. I'm only in my first few minutes on this site, but I am hoping that I will be able to figure out how to get all the episodes.

I am a HUGE fan. I'll write about that on the other topic. THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!

Radio adventure programs have been a way of life with the family going back to the days of building model airplanes with the boys in our basement on weekends. Probably on Sundays the local station had hours of adventure stories that hooked us all, including the girls who came down just to listen. By the end of the day we were full of the scent of airplane glue, banana oil, mysteries, adventures, and all those good things, and we never stopped searching for the new, and the old, adventures. (Not to mention, a generation before that, my old Captian Midnight decoder ring). The daytime programs lead the way to the more sophisticated evening shows that are still at the top of the list with nothing comparable. The imagination is still the best scenery decorator. We are still working - and listening. Thanks for the memories!

Welcome,

There is no official release of these shows. You can find people who have collected the material in the forms you mention.... maybe here, or check the Yahoo Group "cbs_rmt".

The primary way to acquire shows through this forum is a Streamload account. Then you'd be able to make your own CDs or DVDs just as you like them. Just set it up at Streamload.com, then post your request (with ID) on the Sharing/Trading part of the forum.

Cheers!

Hi Jim,

It sounds like you have a player that's not able to read that file type. Not sure of any difference between types of MP3 files....

You might try these CDs in a portable CD player to determine what works - then get a cassette adapter to play them in your car... ? I have a Sony D-NE300 player.

Hello, my name is Tony and I am a CBSRMT addict. smile.gif I remember as a kid, patiently waiting for 10:07 every night for it to start and then sruggling to stay awake until the end. My parents never had a problem getting me to go to bed, reminding me that I was going to miss the first act if I didn't hurry up to bed. I presently listen to the same old episodes over and over and would welcome any episodes to be e-mailed to me at doddtony@hotmail.com. I would appreciate it. I am having problems with Streamload and/or my computer so anything I can get in the interim would be appreciated. Thanks!! Great site, Charlie!!

I have been looking for these programs for a long time. I used to listen late at night, driving home alone, and they were great. I had no idea that there were so many shows done. I only was near a station that carried it in 1976 and 1977.

I can't wait to start listenening to them again.

I've set up the free streamload account. You ask for the ID. Is that the customer name?
I probably made a mistake and put my full name in the account block. Should I redo it if I dont want my fulll name seen in the forum?

With only 100 MB in the free account, can I record those shows to CD, empty the account, and have you put more in? Do I just notify you when there is space available to put more in?

Hard to believe that you would do all of this without charging for it. Thanks for the love of the show.

Hello. My name is Rob. I first started listening to CBS RMT when I was about twenty years old, and that was 28 years ago! I became an instant fan, listening to it every night, and taping every episode I could. We had a good station in Houston where I lived my teenage years, and so the quality of the recordings were excellent. Unfortunately, in 1984 an apartment complex fire destroyed everything I had, including those tapes I had worked so hard to make.

I have missed them very much.

I now live in northern Virginia, and I have NO RMT! I've tried connecting online to some of the radio stations that broadcast over the Web, but I've yet to find one that I can keep a live stream going, for whatever reason.

Hopefully, here I will find others who have had luck in recording episodes, and I've even gone and created an account on Streamload.com (same user name as here).

Thanks for hosting this great forum!

Thanks for sharing your story, Rob. Awful news with that fire - those recordings were probably some of the best ever made of RMT. Glad you weren't injured though.... We're always working on getting better encodes into circulation.

Hello Mystery Fans
My name is Bill Hower, I, like most of you here, am an old fan of the great old radio shows. I remember listening to them as a young man while traveling with my father on his milk truck route here in Western Montana. He had them on the radio every chance he got, and as my father passed away a few years ago, I remebered his passion for these radio shows and decided to find them on the internet. I hope to be able to share some of these old shows with all of you. I have many Sgt Preston and Gunsmoke I will share with you.

My parents divorced when I was a child. My Mom, from Mexico, remmarried and moved to Phoenix. My father, from Missouri, moved to Puerto Penasco (Rocky Point) Mexico, since he could afford to live on his pension there. This little town is located on the North/East end of the peninsula opposite of Baja. This happened in '69 or '70. During the school year my sister and I stayed with Mom. Summers we spent with Pop. During the daytime we would go to the beach. As soon as the sun went down, the town essentially closed, since there was limited electricity. There weren't even any streetlights! There was no TV, and in daytime we could only get Mexican radio. At night was a different story. My father hooked a little wire from the radio onto the metal window screens of the trailer and we would pick up radio from SoCal. My sister and I would search around the dial for music. My father searched for news. One time he was listening to news and we didn't change the station. The next thing we heard was the eerily creeking door from the begining of the CBSRMT. We were instantly hooked! From then on we made it a weekly ritual. I tried to pick it up in Phoenix to no avail. It remained a summer treat from then on until we stopped going to Mexico in the 80's. The CBSRMT fostered a love of the mystery story in me from then on. I even subscribed to the Ellery Queen mystery magazine so I could keep the mystery alive. I'd say it helped turn me into a reader. I am looking forward to listening again, and even hearing shows I never heard before. Glad I found this place!

Hi all - I am new to this forum. I grew up listening to RMT in Idaho (and am still here). One of my favorite memories is when we would travel at night my parents would lay down the back seats of our brown station wagon and we would put blankets and pillows back there and listen to RMT. Great memories! I want to share them with my four children. Make them use their imaginations! I wondered if I could get the files also through streamload, my streamload account is bkperr_92. Hello Charlie and all, brand new member as of today; looking forward to your forum and re-listening to CBSRMT. Like most fans, I listened then as a youngster (I'm now 42), and wistfully think of "the good old days" listening to the old creaking door. I want this for my two boys, instead of the less than desirable stuff that's on TV these days. Can you fill me in on the software that's needed to download the shows? Thanks to all of you who do so much for the love of the show and radio.

Hi all.
Just found this site, was a link from zoot radio which, has alot of downloads but no RMT (grrrr..).
I have always loved RTM. I remember listening to it every night at 10:00 pm. I had a radio kit I got from Radio Shack. It was an "AM one tube Pbox kit" that i put togetter which ran off of a 9 volt battery, an ear plug and a long ant. wire that i strung around my bedroom. It only picked up one station but , that station played the RMT shows! It was a N.Y. station, which one I cant recall.(WOR ? ) . I was about 15 at the time. I also remember listening to The Zero Hour but only some what. Im now in my early 40's and still listening to them and so many other shows.
Thanks to the web it's bring them back.

My name is James Johnson, I am 41 and I grew up listening to RMT in MD and Penn in the 70's. I now listen to OTR with my three children almost every night. My children are 13, 12 and 10.5 they love Dragnet and have never had the chance to share the terror that I remember. I do not think that it will be the same as it was for many of us as the times have changed. My youngest has never seen Dragnet, but his favorite character after "Link" (from legend of Zelda video game) is Joe Friday!

I work in electronics and have all my life, mostly computers and programming. I look forward to sharing my what I have of other OTR.

Hi, my name is Rob I love listening to the radio mystery theater when I was a kid on KFH radio station in Kansas my two brothers and I slept in the same room we all stayed up to listen to theCBS radio mystery theater and loved the squeaking door that bought a little shiver down the back of our necks when we heard it. now with three kids of my own I have been looking for a station or cds or mp3 or something to let my children hear and experince what I did when I was a kid if anybody knows where to find some or if someone has some I would love to show my kids all the radio mystery shows that I could it would be great family time.

Thanks,

Greetings, my name is Glenn and I listened to the CBS Radio Mystery Theater every night on WCCO 830am when I was a kid in Minnesota (I'm 42 now).

I used to record the shows with a small cassette recorder sitting next to the radio. Later my dad gave me an old reel-to-reel and I did the same thing.

None of the recordings survived except maybe 3 or 4 on cassette. I'd be surprised if the audio quality was even listenable.

I've been trying to buy these shows for years but could never find them. Then just recently I stumbled across a website that clued me in to some of the reasons why.

So now I'm downloading off newsgroups and peer-to-peer and it looks like I need to investigate Streamload.

What I could really use right now is a complete list of episodes, assuming such a thing exists. If it doesn't, I'd welcome whatever info anyone has and I'll build my own list.

I understand there were 1399 episodes, are they catalogued anywhere?

Welcome Glenn,

Glad you found us.... For a start you can click on the link at the bottom of this page "CBSRMT log". There are others you can find on the internet too.

Once you get an account with Streamload, post your ID on the sharing/trading page of this forum, and you'll be sent 1399 episodes.

Cheers!

Remembering when I was a kid back in the early 70's listening to Mystery theater on an old AM radio. Baring my stomach to place on the back of radio to boost the reception, and I'm dying to be listening to streaming Mystery theater....and I don't know how? How do I hear these stories online? Welcome all,

Paurog60 - Not sure if any others ran 1399 shows in 8 years. What's the listening booth site? Maybe Jon-n2 would be interested.

Jon_n2 - check out Live365.com. They have a streaming CBS RMT station, I believe. To get shows you can download to your PC, sign up at Streamload.com.

Stodgy - Surely no one who's addicted to OTR and CBSRMT could be stodgy ;)

My name is Wayne from Florida. I remember RMT from when I used to go on the road with my dad in the mid '70's in his semi long distance hauls. At the time I was 12-13 years old. We'd pick up RMT on AM radio, sometimes we'd even pull over if we started to lose the signal, sometimes we could "follow" the program.

Later on I became a big Art Bell fan and rediscovered talk radio and now I'd like to build up my RMT collection. I like to listen to such things while commuting or flying while on business trips. Thanks so much for this service.

Hello, My Name is Ben Austin. I am a college student, and a OTR fan. I was introduced to OTR at a very early age, and among my introductory Programs Were: Bergen and McCarthy,Inner Sanctum, Fibber McGee and Molly, The Shadow, Jack Benny, and of Course CBS Radio Mystery Theatre. For the longest time, I listened to re-broadcasts of old shows on AM740 out of Toronto at 10 Monday nights( I live in Corry, Pa, so we get good reception of Canadian television and radio). When I got to college, I discovered that, in my free time, I could listen to OTR online! I was delighted to find this forum on CBS Radio Mystery Theatre. I look forward to completing my degree in Library Science, while happily listening to OTR when I get the chance!

Hello--just joined the forum. I listened to RMT with my father when I was about 7 or 8 years old. I just started getting into collecting OTR on MP3's, and am excited to have access to the Streamload files. Let me know if I need to do anything else.

FYI--there is an active OTR boradcast in the Seattle/Kirkland area--Jim French has a couple, one is The Adventures of Harry Nile. It is broadcast on Sat and Sun nites on KIXI in Seattle. You can also go to the live tapings.

Thanks,

WOW! CBS RMT has fans everywhere!

I was browsing a friend's list of MP3s and noticed he had a list of 60 "Old Time Radio - Suspense" show files. That got me to remembering how much I enjoyed listening to CBSRMT every night before bed as a young Buffalo, NY teenager in the 70's. I think it was on at 11 or 11:30 back then, it would have been in 1974 and 1975. I used to record it on 8-track every night in case I fell asleep before it was over so that I could listen to what I had missed in the morning before school. It's entirely possible that there's an old 8-track tape kicking around somewhere at my mother's house which still has the last one I taped on it!

I decided to google "radio mystery theater" to see if there was any place on the net which had MP3s of it available and I managed to find my way here. I am so psyched to listen to those old shows again, I bet they bring back a lot of long buried memories for me.

:D

Henry - Very Happy to have found this place!

Hello, I am new to this site. I am in my late 30's & have been listening (and loving) OTR radio shows since I was about 12 years old. The main radio station in my city has played OTR late at night since before I was born. So I have heard lots of OTR usually when I am falling asleep at night. Recently I have been buying some OTR collections of the shows I enjoy most , such as Escape, Inner Sanctum, Lights out, X minus 1, Dimension X ...& my personal favorite Suspense.

I don't think I have heard many CBSRMT shows but I know I will enjoy them. I grabbed one off this site last night & enjoyed it. What I want to know is how others think CBSRMT compares to other OTR shows - Suspense in particular? Any feedback would be appreciated. I also posted this question in the program discussion section but I thought I should introduce myself here as well.

It's a great hobby & one of the things that makes me happy is when our kids have friends over I will ask if someone wants to hear a scary story - someone will always say yes. It usually ends up that about 4 kids agree to listen to one story. The lights go out & the next thing you know they have listened to 3 stories & they are all talking about the scariest or funniest parts. A couple wouldn't leave until they had their own copies of the stories. One of my children listens nightly to OTR of some type with headphones on. It's rare to hear any negative feedback.

Thanks for the website.

Thanks to my mom, our family made a conscious decision not to have a tv in our home. We would rent one for special events eg Olympics, Christmas specials, and hockey playoffs! But radio was the dominant medium in our home. And from our home in Ontario Canada we would listen to CBSRMT out of WBEN in Buffalo. As I recall it would come on around 11:10 pm or something like that. Some great stories and such memorable music. A confession: I recall using one CBSRMT episode as the basis of a short story I wrote in HS :( . Dont tell. ;)

Hello. I was in high school in Dallas in the late 70's. As I recall, CBSRMT aired on KRLD radio at either 9 or 10. I had one of those Radio Shack "Pillow Speakers" - a little flattish disk with a speaker inside that you put under your pillow with a wire that plugged into the earphone jack of my radio. I listened everynight before going to sleep with my dog curled up beside. What great times those were. That creaking door sent a chill every time!

I am looking forward to listening to the mp3's as I travel and ferry kids here and there. The sharing of these programs is a wonderful gift. Thanks.

Great stories from all of you - those in the US and our chilly neighbors to the north. I've actually been to Qualicum Beach, BC. Beautiful area and another world compared to Kansas.

Greetings everyone,

My name is Jim (age 45) and I currently serve in the United States Air Force. I began listening to the CBSRMT in High School. We couldn’t afford much then and the RMT was something I looked forward to hearing every night at 8pm. Afterwards, it was rare to find a radio station that offered the program. In 1981 I stopped looking.

It’s almost 25 years later, I’ve done a lot of traveling and I’ve been away from home more than I care to mention. No complaints. I enjoy what I do.

Having said that, time with the family is tough to plan. So, whenever we go on vacation we drive and to listen to audio books…it’s something we do as a family. I’d also like to introduce my family to an “old friend” and find another opportunity to more spend time together.

Best regards

Jim

Hi, my name is Randy & I'm 48 years old.

I started listening to CBSRMT in 1974. I was working a part-time job in a grocery store in Dayton, Ohio at the time. I got off each evening at 11:00 PM & the show started at 11:07. I enjoyed listening to it while I drove home from work.

I would sometimes sit in my driveway listening because I didn't want to miss any of the program during the time it would take to get from the car to my bedroom.

I listened for several years after that, probably until the end of 1980 when I moved to another state and could no longer find it.

What a joy it has been to recently discover these old shows & begin sharing them with my kids. My youngest daughter is 13 and she REALLY loves the show.

I am thankful for this site & everything it has to offer! Thanks!

Hi Folks, You can call me Jonny or Jon or whatever, just call me for dinner...

But seriously, I became somewhat addicted to OTR listening to a program called Theatre of the Mind, that plays locally (central CA) on Sunday nights. The dramas are decent, not great, but listenable and created and produced by one Jim French.

This got me thinking there must be repositories of OTR, from the classic era that wouldn't have any issues with copyright or whatever, and true enough the shows from the 30's, 40's, and 50's are available out there at various sites that can be found with a few hours/days/weeks of aggressive searching. I've compiled a few thousand hours of shows so far, and I'm still looking for more. It would appear that this CBS Mystery Theatre was one of the latest long running examples of the genre. I found out it existed from collecting Sherlock Holmes radio shows from the Sherlock Holmes UK site.

I think these dramas are wonderful, DW and I love to lie in the dark at night and just get carried away by them. Having a great time with OTR

hi,
being european I feel exotic here, but for a number of years I've been investigating OTR, especially radio plays. as a composer (of non commercial contemporary/experimental music) I've been familiar with contemporary experimental radio plays (the WDR in Cologne is one of the radios specializing in this - less than they once did though, and in France a radio like France Culture produces good work as well.) I have taken part in the realization of some as well. So it was but a little step to listen to the pioneers (and greatly enjoying them.) Another motivation is the blandness of the radio landscape in my country (Belgium), where radio stations specifically advertise that they won't bore the listener with talking but just play music. The advent of digital radio also seems to turn the thing into a continuous juke box. My 'real' radio is glued to BBC world service, the only broadcast I can receive where music is more of an exception. So it's great that interesting, dynamic and creative radio initiatives appear on the WWW here and there. I came upon this site while gathering information for a paper requireing some knowledge on the American radio landscape of the 50's (something I learned is that in the US LW was apparently not used for commercial broadcasting, but for services like weather forecasting...unlike in Europe.)
oops, that's a long rant...

Greetings to all!

OTR folks are a special breed. Once I found out about this form of entertainment, I've been hooked ever since. Much of it is GREATLY superior to sitting in front of the boob tube at night... but everyone reading this is probably well aware of that!

Anyway, thanks for the opportunity to share thoughts, experiences, et al, with Old Time Radio. I love it.

Hi all. I started listening to CBSRMT after hockey practice in the 70's. Practice was over at 10 the show started at 5 after and it took act one to get home and a serious rush to strip and get in the tub to soak my weary bones through acts two and three. It is a very much a warm memory..............

As a kid growing up in the '70's in Northern Kentucky, just across the river from Cincinnati, I first became acquainted with CBSRMT at about the age of 12. I think that this was around 1974, though I can't be for certain. From the moment I discovered the show, I became captivated by it, and a fan for the following 5-6 years it was on. WCKY-AM in Cincy was the local radio station that carried it, though I used to spin my transistor dial to 840-AM WHAS in Louisville to try and pick it up as well.

One of the truly great and artistically significant chapters in my life is how I view my involvement with the CBSRMT. I have many old tapes available for listening and should now investigate how I can get those tapes to be put down into a different format. I was an absolute avid listener and have about 40-50 on tape. I just need to find them, organize them and I think that I could be a great addition to this board.

I look forward to discussing the show in all of its entirety in the days, weeks, months ahead (I just now discoverd the site).

Happy Holidays to all!

I'm so happy to hear that Himan Brown is alive and doing well! I still miss my old friend, one of the greatest actors of his day, or any day, Mr. E. G. Marshall. . .who brought, nightly, the "fear you can hear," into my bedroom!!!

Hi Everyone:
My name is Larry. I'm 51 and live in Coral Springs Florida. Wow... what a thrill to speak to others who enjoyed CBSRMT as much as I have through the years. I currently live in South Florida, but can remember many evenings in Los Angeles (where I lived during the 70's studying film at USC) listening to E.G. introducing the best macabre radio dramas ever produced. I continued listening through the 80's when I lived in N.Y. My interest lead me to get in touch with Himan Brown and somehow I did. I forgot how I made the contact. He told me at that time that the programs weren't available to the public. It was a very short telephone conversation. Well, I'm 51 now and would love to hear some of those great shows again. I have signed up with Streamload for their free service and any shared programs would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for the Memories

Hello,

When I was a kid we listened to RMT during the summers we spent in Colorado. We had no electricity or running water and shared a tiny one room cabin with a packrat and a battery radio. Listening to RMT was pure magic and the only entertainment we had at night. I hope to find it as magical now as it was then...

Hi, I want to try my hand at raido theater. I would like to re-do the old favroits like Yours Truly, Johnny doller, The green Hornet, Dimision X, etc. but I am not sure where to look to see if the scripts are in the public record or who to ask for permission to use their scripts. I have no idea where to start looking for anything. The different web sights (10) that I have found, that deal with audio theater have not appeared to be able to answer my questions concerning scrpits. Any help would be greatly a-pre-she-ate-id.

Hi Charlie and anyone else who's reading. I'm absolutely thrilled to have happened upon your site. Like many other members, I was in my early/mid teens, staying up way too late to listen to Mystery Theater. Having grown up in Canada, I had to tune with excrutiating precision to get a NYC station some 500 miles away.

I've been happy to learn that I'm not the only one who thought that CBSRMT was and is the best thing since sliced bread. Thus I'm very pleased to join your community.

Over the years, I've never lost my love for the spoken word, having had to satisfy it through books on tape and the odd modern radio drama.

I'm looking forward to getting reacquainted with some old friends, and introducing them to my children who I hope will appreciate the dramas as much as I did.

Thanks for starting this site. I began listening to CBS Radio Mystery theater in 1974 in NY. Then, we moved to Kansas City! I listened throughout Highschool. I really miss the programs. Could you send me some? I do have an account at Streamload.

Welcome Doug and Robyn. We hope that you'll stick around after receiving your shows and join the discussion.

Robyn, when you receive your collection, you'll note that many of the recordings of the earliest shows were recorded from a Kansas City station. Might be some old memories there for you.

Well, I grew up in a house of 5 boys (me being one) and 1 girl, so a lot of kids in a house maybe 1200 square feet. And 4 of us boys shared one bedroom, so we always knew what we were all up to. I think my brother Eddy discovered CBSRMT, and we were all hooked! I started listenging about 1979 or 1980, from WWNH in Rochester NH, AM. It started at 10 or 11, I really can't remember!

I do remember we had these little earphones you could put in one ear and listen in, and at least 2 or 3 of us would be listening to the show in the picth dark. Then an ad would come on, and we'd pop out the earphones and chat (whispering loudly, because we were supposed to be asleep!) about the show, "man this is a good one", or "what do you think is gonna happen next" or rarely "man, this one is a dud!".

The next morning we'd share notes, "did we make it all the way to the end", and if not, when did you fall asleep.

Very cool website!

Doug

Hello, my name is Carl and I've been a fan of the CBSRMT as long as I can remember. I used to listen to the show as a kid in Jr. High on WJR-760 out of Detroit, MI. I lived in Farmington, MI. My mother gave me a clock radio as a gift for my 12th birthday and I would have it on while I laid in bed before going to sleep. I'll never forget the sounds I heard, escpecially the bass clarinet from the theme song. I also liked the news too, and sports of course. The tigers and Red Wings. I would tell my friends about this (listening to the radio..especially WJR) and they thought I was crazy. Until in class one day a question was asked about something I heard on the radio and nobody had the answer but me!!!!!

Now, my son Pat enjoys the shows. You know, I haven't put my finger on it but there's something about radio shows that stirs the imagination. It is so much more entertaining than television at times. Not just programs like RMT, but live sports broadcasts as well....it's pretty cool.

Well, I'm off to play hoops this morning, although my body is hinting to me that I'm getting near the end of the line for it.

Take care, and have a great day..

Hello everyone!
I have been a fan of the CBSRMT since I was about 10 years old. I started listening on WORC in Worcester, MA. thanks to a friend who had no television and introduced me to the show. I was immediately hooked and sadly disappointed years later when E.G. Marshall died. What a treat to find out that I am not alone in my enthusiasm for the show. I just signed up for Streamload and hope to be able to find the shows, bring myself back up to speed, and help my children to discover how great these shows were.

Thanks for providing this forum. It is a pleasure to be here.

Hello,

Thanks for providing this service. I am very interested in collecting the CBSRMT shows. My brother and I used to listen to the shows every night and I can’t think of a better gift to give him this Christmas. I remember the Dracula series... I was so scared I jumped up and turned off the radio. I also want to pass on this tradition to my son.
I have set up a streaming account... What do I need to do next? Thanks again.

Hi,I have recorded old time radio shows for years from the radio and I was surprised and jubilant in the 70s to hear The CBSRMT.I had not heard anything like it since the 50s. The CBSRMT stands up well with some of the great old programs.

Hi,

I have just discovered CBS Radio Mystery Theatre through my husband. He told me stories how he would sit up at night in his room listening quietly to his radio and eating strawberry Pop-Tarts.

I have found a couple of shows and listened and I am hooked! I love the old commercials too.

Hello Charlie
I am retired and live in the UK. I have not long been introduced to MP3 format and enjoy surfing the Web. I heard one of the Radio Mysteries recently and thought it was great. I had a good look at your forum and am very impressed. I am pleased to make your acquaintance.
I joined Streamload (ID: George_Cash) and was wondering if you could possibly send me some of the episodes. I thank you in anticipation.
I look forward to reading future postings in your forum
Kind regards

just found this site and i am so happy. like most of you in here, i listened to radio mystery theatre as a kid. i would torture myself by turning out the lights and either sit or lay in the bed only to fall asleep and dream horrible dreams of being chased by conjured nightmares of my childish imagination. i am so glad to know that i am not alone in my quest to revisit my childhood with an even more cultured imagination. hope to make contact with some of you - until next time........

I have been lurking in the shadows for some time, and finally am taking the plunge by joining the forum. I'm thrilled to see so many others who enjoy RMT.

Like many of you, I first listened to the show when it began in 1974. I remember thinking at the time, this must be a rebroadcast of a show originally from the 1940s - it was that good. I spent many nights falling asleep while listening to the show...don't know how many times I missed the ending.

I don't have any files to share yet. However, if someone out there would be kind enough to provide a few MP3s, I would respond in kind as soon as I have something worthwhile. My Streamload ID is afvet.

Thanks, in advance, for your help.

Hi! I'm new today. I actually stumbled across this site while researching an old episode. I finally found the name and was looking to download it. Hopefully I can get it and many more!

Back in 1974 I was in summer camp with a number of friends listening to the "the Fatal Marksman". We were all supposed to be in bed but had to listen.

The show reached the part where he got his new bullets, and made his way back to the village before the exhibition for his bride-to-be the next day.... this is where the counselor came in and took away the radio.....to this day I have yet to hear the end of the story.... Help...please.... smile.gif

Hi Charlie,

I can't tell you what a discovery your website is for me. When I was 4 and 5 years old, growing up in Salisbury, Maryland, I would fall asleep at night listening to Radio Mystery Theatre on the local AM Radio station..I think it was WBOC. I would pull the blankets up to my eyes and listen intently to the creaking doors, the footsteps, and the screams... I was delightfully terrified!

I hadn't thought about it in years until just recently.. as I start to appreciate those days of my youth and I look forward to introducing my children to the magic of radio theatre and day gone by.

Hello All....

New to the forum. I used to listen to CBSRMT as a kid likely in the late 70's on KOA radio in Denver. The shows used to run at 10:35 I Think.

I started listening becuase we would go to Denver Nugget Basketball games and after the post game show, the CBSRMT would start.

I'd listened to Old Time Radio for most of my childhood at night in bed. Sometimes 3-4 shows a night....no wonder I'm still a night owl.

I'd like to start a digital collection so please send me anything you have. Streamline ID: cbecker1

Glad to find the forum.

Hi, my name is Jason, finding this site was amazing, and I'm looking forward to getting to relive the CBS Mystery Theater shows.

I'm 33, my recollections of individual shows are vague..but the creakin' door intro has been in my brain ever since! I was around 5-8 years old when my mom and I would listen to the shows on WSTV, Steubenville OH....brings back great nostalgic memories. I've gotten about a dozen shows from file-sharing services, but I try not to use the file-sharing services anymore. Anyway, glad to be aboard!

I am really glad to have stumbled onto this site. I actually found CBSRMT through the General Mills Adventure Theater. I saw an ad on a box of Cheerios and tuned in the next weekend. During the broadcast the RMT was mentioned and I stayed up late one night to listen. For a jr high kid, it was real creepy to listen to something like that at 11 o'clock at night. I had to to keep the volume down not to waked up my little brother which made it all the more scary. The only problem was that I rarely made it to the end of the show because I would always fall asleep. I'm looking forward to getting the old shows of both RMT and RAT.

I live in Japan now and have grown tired of Japanese television, so these old radio shows are great entertainment for me.

Thanks for this site

Hi there Charlie:

My name is Ralph and I loved listening to Mystery Theatre as a kid with my father, right before bedtime. There was something different about it from tv. It permitted me to use my imagination by visualizing the characters and their actions. It also allowed me to experience a taste of what my father's childhood was like, listening to radio shows. I have already set up my Streamload account, in hopes you will be able to send me the episodes. How many episodes do you think the free version can take?

I have just recently discovered OTR and have downloaded a few from Oldtimeradiofans.com but I keep hearing about these cbs radio mystery theater shows and wondering if I totally been missing out on the best of radio. I made an account on streamload with this same name but am not sure what to do next.

Hi, I grew up in Southern Californesia, and remember my dad, brother and I listening to the show coming home from camping on Sundays. I started listening during the week most nights, it came on at 9:06pm on knx1070am Los Angeles.
I had other friends who liked to listen. We would just sit in our cars and listen to the show! Scariest show I remember, was when there were some people trapped in a cave, and there was something in the cave getting them. Not sure what happened.
I do remember having to turn off the radio on some nights as it got a bit too scary!

Anyway, Can anyone send me some files so I can introduce my wife to rmt. If so, thank you very much.

I started collecting shows on limewire and then after I had about 100 shows, I found this guy on ebay that was selling all 1,399. It came in a set of 4 dvd's and he threw in some other old time radio shows on another dvd. I wanted to collect them myself and I give the people that do alot of credit. I am a CPA in California, and instead of music, I play CBSRMT and other OTR programs in my office. I started listening to "When Radio Was" on long out-of-state trips. I was quickly addicted, and found myself disappointed that they were over in just an hour. I started downloading episodes of everything I could find, Dimension X, X-Minus One, Abbott & Costello, Inner Sanctum, etc, but my favorite has become CBSRMT. I came across this site when I was searching for additonal places to download missing episodes.

I'm looking forward to browsing the site and forums and seeing what there is here.

I began listening to RMT as a child, fueled by an intense fascination of the stories of my parents of the radio shows they listened to as children.

Every night, with my trusty flashlight by my side and the covers pulled over my head and tightly around me. I positioned my RadioShack pillow speaker under my ear and began tuning the static hiss of the A.M. airwaves until I picked up the peculiar sounds that I knew indicated a CBS station...and then I waited. Waited for the excitement that only comes to children who lay awake, alone in the dark, anticipating ghost stories.

I don't think that I missed an episode, and it was a sad and empty day when finally there were no more stories left to wait and hear.

Until now...?

Hi there!

My name is Michael. I have jumped in here a time or two now and read some of the material. I was so excited to find this place that I immediate signed up here and at StreamLOAD, and e-mailed Charlie to say hi. I'm including part of my e-mail to him:

I am simply amazed. Thirty some years have come and gone since the days I lay awake late at night(with Mom and Dad constantly checking on me 'cause they wanted me to go to sleep) listening to CBSRMT. I have let a lot of things slip away from me over the years. The ironic thing is that I have worked in highly technical fields most of my life and yet(slap me) it never occurred to me until now to search for something(anything) about CBSRMT on the INTERnet. There seems to be quite the presence on the net for CBSRMT, but this forum seems to really stand out as far as being active goes. I used to run a free single line/single node BBS: The Coffee Shop some 10+ years ago and loved the idea of real messaging. No chatting, no gaming but rather just networked messaging. Thanks for being here when I needed you! smile.gif

Hi,

I'm new here. I grew up listening to RMT and just did a search on where to get the old programs. I was so sad when they went off the air.

I saw a place to order the whole set on CD, but would still love to download some mp3's How can I download some episodes?

Hello Michael and Aksum!!! Welcome to the forum.
Aksum---- I bought the whole set of RMT from a guy on ebay. The set came on DVD in MP3 format. You can set up a free streamload account by clicking on the banner on the top of this page and request episodes in request section here in this forum. I also found alot of episodes on limewire.
Keep in mind though that people are really not supposed to seel the episodes and make a profit.

Just stumbled on this site! I remember listening to CBSRMT when I was in jnr&High school (about the only good thing about those years!) Could only listen Friday and Saturday, because I "had school the next day!" Still a big fan. Am a writer part-time influenced by CBSRMT. We need a "Radio Night Gallery" today! Best to all fans, I am

Isn't great!! I remember listening when I was about 12 years old and I was very upset when it finally went off. I remember listening at around 6 or 7 pm every night. Stop by the Show of the week section of the forum.

Hello All! I remember my family taking the radio with us camping trips and sitting around the crackling campfire listening to CBSRMT. I was hooked. I enjoy alot of OTR as well, but love CBSRMT. I would record them on to reel to reel when atmospheric conditions allowed KOMA signal to skip in. Can't wait to hear more.

My name is Kevin, I know I'm old because I'm trying to calculate my age, oh yes I'm 42. My brothers and I grew up listening to rmt on the radio North of Boston. The trick at the end of the show each night was figuring out who would turn off the radio. I would ussually fake being asleep, because I was too lazy to get up and turn off the radio.

I found one show on the internet a couple of years ago and just listening to the creaking door brings back memories.

I signed up for a free streamload account "4cbsrmt" . Not sure how this works but if you could send me a show or two that would be great!

Hi,
I have only just come to find the wonderful thrills and chills of Radio Mystery Theater. I had heard of it from magazines and such when I was growing up, but never had a chance to hear it for myself. But a couple months ago I was given a cd full of shows from a close friend. And let me just say that I am HOOKED in a big way. I have listened to the cd so many times that I can also totally recite each show on it. I am intrested in trying to collect the entire series and look forward to getting to know other fans of this fantastic show.
Everyone take care. And until the door creaks open again...Pleasant dreams...:)

Hi,
The CBSRMT would come on at 10pm in N.E. Ohio and I would hit the hay and tune in and listen when I was a kid. The only problem was that more often than not, I fell asleep never hearing the end of the story as I had to get up early and go to school. So, here I am to at least catch up on some endings besides maybe a few I haven't heard. I am new here and I look forward to this listening experience brought back from the past.

I apologize for not doing this sooner.

Back in '74, I waited weeks for the premier, being an avid Agnes Moorehead fan. I wasn't disapointed even if the commercials were corny. Actually they had a right to be, the show was sponsered by Kellogg's. I listened over WEEI from 10 to 11 pm at least three times a week, until I went off to college. Unfortunately, the reception was terrible at best (UMass is in a valley) and having freedom for the first time, I went out most nights. Sears was such a struggle I never heard a complete episode of any!

I was glad to find the show still on after graduation and listened at least twice a week until the end.

It's wonderful that with this forum and the magic of the internet, the show is not only still alive but thriving. I plan to listen to all the series again. By the time I finish, my ten year old should be ready for college!

Thank you everybody.

Hi, my name is Daniel. I have been living in Israel for the past 17 years. I grew up in Chicago, and loved listening to Mystery Theater at night. My 3 eldest children are now at the age when I started listening to these shows. I found a few and we love listening to them. I find them to be so much better than audio books. I am also hoping to start a collection soon so we can enjoy more of them.

Thanks for setting up this forum.

Daniel

Hello, this is so cool.
I used to keep my transistor radio under my pillow at night to listnen to CBS Mystery Theater, and I never thought I could hear them again. I thought they were long forgotten.
Thank goodness we have the internet!

Hi:
I listened to RMT in Seattle in the 70's and 80's. I'm glad that it's still available here. I take it with me in the car.
Thanks.

G.C. gaily-c,

welcome to the cbsrmt.com forum
i haven't posted any news of my adventures in here for awhile, but i too am a radio theater fan of times past up to the present
Recently, i have moved up to Red Lake, Minnesota from Tsaile, Arizona and am searching for radio theater programs in this area, but have not found any yet
So, i rely on public library audio books in the meanwhile
Just the sight and thought of your 'transistor radio' tucked under your pillow takes me back to the grand ol' evenings when i would tune into and listen to CBS Radio Mytsery Theater with E.G. Marshall in the late 1970's on WCCO 830 AM radio in south Minneapolis, MN
Such a helpful sleep aid for me before retiring to Sandman's Land, haha' !!!
Enjoy the forum

I remember lying in bed at night and listening to the CBSRMT when I was young. I have since obtained the programs in MP3 format. I listen to them on my iPod. They bring back fond memories.

Hi,
My name is Kevin and I just recently joined. I live in Indiana, and listened to CBSRMT whilst growing up.
I've come here for many reasons, one of which is to see about locating tapes, or DVD's of the episodes.
I was also wondering about identifying musical scores for some of the episodes, in particular, an episode called, "A Holiday Visit".

Best regards,
Kevin

My son loves listening to books on tape. Tonight I told him about a great show I used to listen to every night when I was his age. Feeling very sentimental, I checked the internet to see if I could possibly find something about it and discovered this site.
Wow! There were so many kids under the covers with radios just like me. I loved those stories. Every night in bed with my radio uner the pillow, EG Marshal's voice would carry me off into that vivid world of imagination. It was story telling at its best.

I would really like to get some of the shows on a CD for my son, and myself, to listen. I'm new to this and a bit low-tech. How can I do this?

Hello all, I have recently been wondering about the old RMT shows I used to hear on AM radio back in the Seventies/early Eighties. Unfortunately I don't have a whole lot of knowledge or memory on specific shows but would like to revive that a bit. To let you know, I am totally blind, and would likely need a web interface with which to download shows. I'd rather do that than trade since I have nothing to trade discs with. I haven't found an accessible newsreader as of yet. How could I best gain access to the mp3's of the 1399/1400 episodes? I look forward to the group and the hundreds of hours of listening memories that this promises. Thanks in advance.

Hello, I'm Jeffrey from Las Vegas. My friend and I were and still are big fans of CBSRMT and I'm excited to find this site. I remember driving through the desert at night years ago and listening to the program while the signal faded in and out. Best wishes from Las Vegas!
