View Full Version : When/Where do you listen?

I was just curious when and where each of you listen to the shows. Many of you mentioned that as children you would listen in bed late at night. This made me wonder how many people prefer to listen in bed at night now that you are adults.

I bought a transmitter that connects to the sound card on my PC and transmits to 87.9 FM on any radio in the house. My wife and I only listen late at night while in bed. It does seem to add a certain amount of suspense when you're in the dark! However, like some have mentioned in other posts, I sometimes (frequently) fall asleep in the second act and have to replay the same episode the next night.

How about you? What method do you use, i.e. PC, MP3 player, portable device? And do you listen during the day or at night?

I always listen in my study. I am either working on my scale model of the Titanic (I've already strung 300 feet of optic fiber) or just listening to CBSRMT. My computer is the only mp3 playing device I own.

I occasionally fall asleep on the couch in my study while listening.

great idea for a discussion thread... comparing past to present!

Presently I listen whenever I can, in fact, it has almost replaced any time I might have spent listening to music!
I usually get an episode or two in first thing in the morning using my portable MP3 disc player, then maybe another in the evening before bed (bed time is reserved for those critical family related discussions with my wife ;)

Today, for example, my wife has gone out to our cottage, and I have stayed at home to putter around the house. The computer has been belting out CBSRMT all day. I even took the portable out for an hour and sat out in the back yard for an episode.

It's funny, but I've started looking at the passage of time in terms of 45 minute chunks. "I'm going to cut the grass, dear... will only be an episode!", "Honey! I'm just about to replace the faucet in the bathroom... will take me a couple episodes."

hahaha

cheers!

LOL! Yes, I also think of things in terms of episode lengths. My oldest daughter is at college about 45 mintues away so I get two episodes in whenever I drive over (one each way). I listen when I cut the lawn, when I help clean the house or when I'm in bed. I'll take just about any opportunity to listen but I'm not quite as good at doing my logs. I have several methods of listening from an RCA Lyra 128mb MP3 player to a portable CD/MP3 Player and finally my laptop computer (which goes everywhere with me). Perhaps my favorite time to listen is at bedtime because I used to stew about silly things that happened during the day and now I find I sleep much better!

I find I listen to the show mostly when I'm working at my computer. I have downloaded most of the episodes and burned them onto data discs and pop one in whenever I'm at the computer. As a graduate student, I spend a lot of time writing papers and researching on the internet and I find listening to CBSRMT episodes helps to pass the time. I also listen to them on my MP3 player when I go to bed but usually fall asleep half way through the episode. Until recently I had a 40 minute commute to work so I would listen to episodes coming and going. Also, I recently took a trip to California and listened to episodes during the 4 hour flight. It sure makes the time "fly"! :D

I'm definitely not a multi-tasker so I can't really listen and do another challenging mental task at the same time. I envy those that can!

I'm definitely not a multi-tasker either. Now I have my MP3 player, I like to sit on the front porch and listen as I smoke a fine, hand-rolled cigar.

However, I listened tonight in front of my computer. As 0469 "The Strange Passenger" was moving from act 1 to act 2, I was doing some editing on the listening logs page. I wasn't paying attention to what I was doing, so I ended up deleting my entire listening log!!!!!

I had a lot of time invested in that thing. I'm really bummed. I wanted to beat my head on the wall like Doby the House Elf screaming "Brian's so dumb! Bad Brian!". But then I noticed my toddler daughter observing my behavior and decided such a scene might frighten her. I had to suck it up and stay in control. I settled for a whispered expletive.

I have the data backed up on the Yahoo board, so at least I didn't lose the raw data. It is certain that I have many hours of cutting and pasting ahead of me.

Brian, sorry to hear about your log mishap but I'm glad that you at least had a back-up of the info. It would be a real loss to the board if we had to do without your listening log. I've checked it often to find a new episode to listen to. Good luck getting it back up on the board.

i can imagine the sinking feeling that must have gone through you as you relized that. i know i had asked you to edit an accidental post i had made... my apologies if that in any way contributed to the loss...

glad to hear you have some backed up... lesson to us all, BACK UP!!

my sympathies, Brian...

Brian,
I have to say I noticed the absence of your log almost immediately. Like Hamlet, I look forward to reading your daily logs and I had just opened the page to find a good review for my evening selection. It truly would be a great loss to the board if your logs are lost so I'm grateful that they're still available. Let me know if I can help cut and paste.

likewise, brian... if it's a matter of cut and paste to restore your logs... many hands make light work smile.gif

maybe vince and i could take a section of the database and post them for you... and, being on holidays for another 6 weeks, i've got nothing but time!

cheers

The logs are publicly available on the Yahoo site. Charlie has a link on this page.

I cut and pasted for about 90 minutes yesterday and got what is there now redone.

Miles, don't sweat it. I should have paid attention to what I was doing. Good thing I'm not a surgeon. I'd amputate the wrong leg.

If you guys want to help, I'd really appreciate that. Find out where I left off in my log, go to the Yahoo page archives, and start pulling from there.

Thanks for your help.

I like to listen in many different ways, in 2001 I bought a Kangaroo CD/MP3 player and sometimes I walk around with that listening.
I also have a midget FM transmitter that plugs into a headphone jack and it transmits to say a few hundred feet away. This device was created for Nintendo by Radio Shack (clearance shelf goody I got a few years back) for cordless headphone playing it came with an FM radio as well. I use it to transmit to a reproduction 1930's style cathederal radio I have in my living room.
Sometimes I listen while I am on the computer at home and at work..I try to get two episodes a day in.

I listen sometimes in the afternoons when I am doing work around home. I work from 4:30 AM until noon and then go home and work on our home-based business most days.

Lately I have not had time to listen at all -- note the lack of my participation in the SOTW (I'll catch up on those). I'm just too busy to do any listening right now but that will eventually pass.

When they come out with a device that has about a 100 gig hard drive that you can carry around with you to listen, I'll listen more. smile.gif

I confess I try to mimic the radio-on-the-nightstand. I bought some $9 speakers and set them atop my clock radio, they plug right into the headphone jack of my mp3 player. They are appropriately 'tinny' and sound like a big old AM radio. I listen to 1-2 shows several nights a week. I can also run the line-out thru my stereo in the living room, so I can listen there too. I burn some of my favorites to audio CD so others can enjoy them easily. Whichever, I can't multi-task either, Vince, and with these shows I don't really want to. I find I get the best 'theater-of-the-mind' effect when I focus on the show.

Usually going to bed. I also listen in the car a lot. Lately haven' t had time for a whole lot of listening due to other projects. I did pop in "Shadow of a Killer' last night though.

This summer I've been managing several episodes a day while out at the cottage. Usually have the walkman on while chopping wood, canoeing, walking, doing yard work. I've even been getting my wife to listen to an episode with me before bed!

i like to tune into cbsrmt while i'm on the computer. i usually listen to live365 or one other site i can't think of rirht now. i also tape episodes to listen to at work on my walkman. i do sometimes miss things so i have to listen again but i don't have much other time to listen . i used to listen in bed as a child but now i'm usually asleep 5 minutes after my head hits the pillow.
one thing happened to me last week. i taped The Pharoh's Curse or most of it i should say up til the end of act 2 and listened to it several times that way. the first time i thought the egyptian archiologist was the bad guy. the second time i listened trying to think John was the bad guy. the last time i listened to the whole show thinking the policeman might be the villan. it was interisting when i could pick out the lines that cast a bad light on certain characters. those kind of shows are fun. when it's his word against hers and either one could be the guilty one.

Dave,
Now you've piqued my interest. I'm going to have to check out the program you've noted.

First off, my apologies as I recently posted a similar posting without realizing this one was here. I have (hopefully) directed traffic to this post instead.

Anyhow, my response was/is: I listen in a variety of places. Car, kitchen, office... but 98% of the episodes are caught in bed. I put one "earbud" into my ear and lay face down and enjoy the show. I do it everynight. I use an Apple iPod and change out about ten episodes per week.

My other favorite place to tune in, is while driving alone on a long trip and the sun goes in leaving the road, the darkness, and a wonderfully chilling tale of the macabre! hehe

Again, sorry for reposting, but it IS an interesting topic!

Best wishes,

Fizz

As folks can see from my recent inactivity in the Listening Logs and Show of the Week forums, I have not been able to listen lately. I am hoping this will change soon. I would like to buy a portable listening device but I am waiting for them to get a little larger on the storage first.
