Charlie,
Still researching that one. Am getting the Sound Blaster Audigy Platinum sound card. That will allow me to run my Nakamichi + BSR EQ straight into the PC. I can do most of the EQ through my BSR, then remaster it with the software once it is loaded. I am pretty sure it will come with some type of editing software.
Any recommendations on good software?
I use Winamp to convert from mp3 to wav files for use in home or car systems.

BTW: Only a small handful of the ones I recorded as a kid are in circulation. I dubbed them from the cheap Radio Shack tapes to Maxell stuff in the early 80's. I still have the ORIGINAL copies, which have little playback time. I have been listening to the safety copies for years.
There are of course some anamolies with the old ones, but they are pretty good quality across the board.
The ones I did release were regarded as some of the better ones around.
I guess I am a closet audiophile! Good sound quality is most important.

Ross,
My favorite software is Sound Forge but I also use Cool Edit.
I do not have the most recent version of Sound Forge and the version that I have needs a plug-in to be able to work with mp3 files. I did see Sound Forge at Best Buy the last time I was there.
I do have the most recent version of Cool Edit and it works great too.
Cool Edit is really a great program for encoding mp3 and converting back to .wav files, etc.
I use Cool Edit when I start with a file to do any edits that need to be done, then I normalize the file to -2 db and encode it as an mp3 at whatever bitrate, etc., that you want.
These programs are not cheap but if you are really into audio it is worth it to own software like that.
I have links to both programs web sites on the main page here at http://www.iamoka.com/cbsrmt/
Hope that helps...
