I am going to Bangor Wednesday and may purchase a DVD burner. Does anyone else have one? Do they further compress digital audio during the burning process?

I don't think it is going to compress the files any differently than a CD-R but you will only need 3 or 4 DVD-R discs as opposed to 27 CD-R discs.

Well, I was all set to make the purchase but I red the specs and my machine won't quite cut it so it looks like no DVD burning for now. :(

Charlie,

There is another disquieting aspect of using DVD to store data.

The DVD world has a variety of competing standards, as I understand it. There are advantages and disadvantages of each standard but most diquieting is that by their definition many are mutually exclusive of the other as far as talking from one machine to another or from one to a regular DVD player etc.

They include DVD+RW, DVD-RW, DVD-RAM, DVD-ROM, etc.

It would be nice to see the standards consolidation Genie touch the standards and allow one to emerge as THE standard.

Just a thought.

Learner,
The good thing about standards is there a so many to chose from. ;)

This story always makes me chuckle and cringe at the same time:

In 2000 Apple Computer released a machine that had, "The all new industry standard DVD-RAM drive."

The DVD-RAM discs (about $20 each) were normal DVD discs with black lines screened on them and were encased in a thick plastic case - looking more like large 3.5" floppy discs.

My company at the time bought a bunch of them, because, after all they were "the industry standard."

Well, less than eight months after release, Apple must've decided that their DVD-RAM drive was a dud and they stopped production on them. Soon thereafter, they released the same machines with a SuperDrive - a regular Pioneer DVD burner. Again, it was called "the innovative industry standard."

It's funny, but this just goes to show how the words "industry standard" have become as trivial a marketing tool as "100% pure" and "all natural."

I have a Panasonic Camcorder that uses "mini" DVD-RAM discs. The DVD-RAM really does have only 1 "standard" in that there is only 1 format for DVD-RAM. The punch line? Panasonic is the only manufacturer that makes a reader/writer that is compatible with the (smaller) capacity of the mini DVD-RAM disc.

I should have mentioned that I did pick up a DVD burner a couple of weeks ago... I does both DVD+R and DVD-R formats and I was able to get into it for less than $100 after rebate.

I have not transferred any CBSRMT onto DVD yet but I hope to soon.
