I'm curious how we come to have all these recordings of the CBSRMT episodes after all these years? As a kid, the only way I ever made a recording was by putting my little tape recorder up against the radio speaker. As a result, you could usually hear my little brother in the background or somebody talking. But it seems many of the recordings have no ambient sound in the background.

I assume all the recordings we have were made by individuals?
How did people make such clean recordings?
Do we actually have recordings of ALL of the episodes?

Yes, it is incredible. There are recordings of all 1400 shows. For many shows, there are several different recordings available. We exchange episodes here fairly frequently. If one guy has a bad recording, he can usually get a better one from somebody here.

Many of the recordings were captured during the show's revival in the late 80s. There are many recordings of the rebirth of the series in the late 90s with Himan Brown as the narrator.

There are at least two major encode projects going on now. One guy has over 100 episodes on tape that are being encoded now and being posted on newsgroups. Another guy has encoded more than 100 episodes sent to him from around the country. He makes them available on newsgroups. (Wish I knew how to use newsgroups).

Brian (Ohio) and Hamlet (Brian),
Great topic. I get a thrill each and everytime I listen to a program so I personally owe the archivists among us a great deal of gratitude. I didn't have the foresight as a youngster to record the shows so I was completely at the mercy of others. Charlie was the key by providing me with a ton of shows within hours of my first request. In addition, he has put together a terrific web presence that has made all of this possible. I then learned a great deal from the gent who so kindly provided me with a complete set of cd's (the guy is a purist and an amazing archivist) and I've been greatful to Brian (Ohio) as he's supplemented my set with several cleaner copies. BTW, the gent I mentioned (who sent me a complete set) had access to a radio station with clean copies. He and his partner spent countless hours archiving a substantial number of programs and then they MP3-encoded them for our community. The people I've met via this hobby are truly a outstanding and I consider them friends.

Thanks for the info. I've noticed that on his website, Himan Brown comments that he is holding off releasing the CBSRMT episodes commerically. Surely he's aware that they are already out there for public consumption via the internet. What is he waiting for?

Hamlet (Brian),
I recall visiting Himan Brown's site as one of my first attempts at getting some CBSRMT programs. If memory serves, Himan and Melina have a page that's putting out a feeler for interest in the programs. I signed up but never heard anything so I found Charlie's site. If they ever begin to sell the programs, I'll be one of the first in line to buy them.
